Add in Graphs
« on: July 29, 2008, 10:03:42 pm »

I just had this idea and couldn't find any mention of it in the dev notes.

If we had a skilled broker it would be nice if we could see graphs. Because of the graphics it would probably be best if they were scatterplots, but I think it could be really helpful.

you could plot population, fortress wealth, and stocks vs time. This would have a couple of important functions.

One is that it could just be nice to look at the growth of your fortress. Just imagine looking over population graphs for all of the forts you have made. There could be so many humorous memories.

It could also be helpful by letting you compare your food stocks this winter compared to the previous one. It could help you figure out if you are in trouble, or if you are just in your standard variation.

Finally, and I think that this is a big one, as the game starts to lag a bit with more dwarfs I begin to loose track of time. I start to wonder if there is a reason my work order is not done yet, or if it is just because little in game time has passed. I feel that such graphs would help put things into perspective for me.

Thoughts?

Graphs would be cool, but they'd likely take up a lot of power to generate and keep updated.

I don't think they'd be too hard to implement. The game would store data such as amount of food, population, etc, at the end of each month (or season), which could easily be plotted over time. If you had a fortress running for 3 years you'd only have 36 (or 12) points to plot.

Yea I don't imagine that it would be continuously storing data, just 1-3 times a season I don't imagine would be too bad.

I love pie and I love pie charts. I'm not sure, visually speaking, how they would look with the Assci. If anyone could pull off the look it would be Toady, but it might be best to just stick to graphs with discrete points. But what do I know? Perhaps we can have all sorts of different graphs and have them look good as well.

Graphs + ASCII = Don't Work.

We'd need real graphics before this would be workable.

1) Not entirely true
2) The game is in OGL, so ascii tiles need not be used.
(Ever used the ingame [V] option?)

Gasp. We could have non-ascii graphs in our ascii game? That's neat, and I forgot all about [V].
