Yet another thread about war fish
« on: July 29, 2008, 10:22:36 am »

Well the easy bit is caging the fish, i biuld a floodable area and biuld cage traps in it. Voila, instant carp. Then taming isnt that hard either, just tell a dwarf to "tame large creature" and they just bring food to the cage, and hey presto, tame carp. My problem is when i assign them to be trained into war creatures it says "no creature". Any ideas on what might be causing this?

(also i modded carp to have [PET] and [trAINABLE])

I know zero about modding, but maybe you're missing a tag, or they're having trouble training fish underwater?  You might need a dungeon master, too?

You might get better results posting this in the modding forum.  Guess it's done now :P.

You may have a point there, i didnt need to tame them in water since they stay in the cage, but i might need to train them in water since training involves them being taken out of the cage.

Alas it did not work! I trained my animal trainer up to novice swimmer, put him in a room with caged tame carp, and a kennels. Flooded the room to 6/7, and the same result. "no creature"

That last gobbo would stand there, missing an arm, punctured in a kidney, liver, and spleen, fading in and out of consciousness at the far end of where the drawbridge would go, and his last sight would be the drawbridge dropping down and smashing him like a bug.

God DAMN I love this game!

Maybe its because they need to take the carp to the kennels to train them and they would need to take them out of the water to do that.

So if you haven't already, maybe you also need to flood the kennels and have a continuous flooded area between the kennels and the room with the caged carp.

You might also need to release them from the cage first, as when I bought dogs in cages from the caravan I think I needed to release them before they were available for training.

I think 3/7 water would be better than 6/7... even swimmy dwarves can have dangerous terrain issues...

This. Caged creatures are ignored when the job searches for trainable animals.

They said it couldnt be done....... Ladies and Gentledwarves, I hishan, am proud to present, war carp.

The problems lay in that carp survival water level and dwarves job levels are differnt, so i had a tidal system going in which the water oscillated between 5 and 3 water(using pumps). I drowned about 10 trying it.

so i have just built a fort on a river in an elf warzone, and i am wanting to have hostile fish to attack them.  i might keep it stock and not have actual warfish, but i still have questions for the fishmasters here:

what is safe wading depth where a dwarf wont drown?  4?

what is swimming depth where a dwarf starts training his swim skill? 3?

what is this "fish survival depth" you mention?  5?  how did you find out?

what is the last safe depth before jobs are canceled due to dangerous terrain?  3?

thanks!

1) dwarves will wade (walk normally) until 4, at 4 they start to tread water (at swimming skill or not)

2)starts at 4

3)check the wiki search "water". And its 5, but they can survive for a bit out of it

4)Im not certain, im pretty sure its 3

Another note it took me a full year of a totally dedicated fortress to do this, its not a time efficient defence method. I also drowned around 10 carp training my proficient animal trainer to higher levels(so he would do it faster, hence carp would survive).

Its worth considering that fish tend to attack anything anyway, so having the elves cross a checkerboard section of your river would probably do the trick also

I also like the title "Fishmaster" I may have to steal it.
