Various Questions!
« on: June 06, 2008, 05:27:00 pm »

Hullo. I have a few questions regarding the forums and both Fortress and Adventurer mode. While I COULD create 3 separate threads, I think since I only have a couple of game mode questions each it's just generally Better to post them here with my forum questions, right? Right?

Anyway, most relevant questions first: Forums!

1.) I've noticed whenever someone pulls an example dwarf out of his/her posterior, it's Urist McProfession. Any particular reason to use 'Dagger' as the name? Is it perchance in homage to the Mad Dwarf hermit story?

2.) What's up with everyone putting 'God of Blood' as their forum title? =P I know it's a reference to Armok, but why is making it your title amusing?

If there are links to threads that contain these explanations, I'd really appreciate that linkage, as I can teach future generations and will have first-hand knowledge of why such-and-such is funny. =P

Adventure Mode

1.) It seems like I can only break limbs and such when confronting humanoids. Am I missing something? Is there a way to break a wolf's leg aside from smacking it with a war hammer?

2.) I've checked the DF wiki for this specifically and it just doesn't seem to be present: If I have a *<<Iron>>* (except with 3 bars where = is, not 2) and a 'Steel Shield', which one is better? Steel is 133% effective and Iron is 100%...but what does the quality of the shield affect besides price, if anything?

--
Fortress mode:

1.) Uhm...well... The DF wiki has mentioned various ways of using underground rivers and magma streams, tubes, pools, etc. But how the hell do I gain initial access to it without it destroying my fortress? I've seen the before and after many times but never the *during*. Why do some people (especially the oldschool non-z-level builds) mine right up to the edge with no effect while others mine into the side and have the water/magma flow right out? I mean, assuming an old build with only 1 z-level, we'll take Boatmurdered for instance, why did their magma run out the side when the lever was pulled but *NOT* run into the fortress which was on the same level?

I'm really, really confused about how to actually put underground water and magma to use. >_<

2.) I once read on the DF wiki that a particular utility allowed 'some nefarious cheating', such as 'being able to mark your nobles for butchering'. This sounds like pure, unfiltered Win to me. I hate nobles. Not just in DF. Everywhere. Useless good-for-nothings that make demands and laws and refuse to do anything. Can I edit something to allow their butchering without that utility? Or better yet, can I edit a RAW to prevent them from ever arriving in the first place, so I can have a peaceful Commune?

Sorry if this being here annoys anyone. Thank you -very- much in advance for the solutions to some of life's greatest mysteries.

Read The Wiki, in many places

Forums.1: Aye. None shall forget Urist.

Forums.2: No idea.

Adventure.1: No idea.

Adventure.2: RTW 1 and RTW 2. "*«≡Iron Shield≡»*" is an exceptional iron shield with superior quality decorations. Exceptional = 1.8x damage, so the iron shield has 180% block power. "Steel Shield" is a plain steel shield. Steel has a 133% multiplier, so the steel shield has 133% block power.

Fortress.1: Game mechanics were way different in 2D. The cave and magma rivers were effectively one z-level below the floor. Also, the method for moving fluid around was highly different. Read The Archive. If you want to know how we do it in 3D, we mine to the top layer where there is an empty space with no fluids. How to find that? I don't know, I always use utilities.

Fortress.2: I'm not sure. It involves adding the butcherable tag(s) to the raws, and possibly creating a new world. I could've done it in 2D, but now I just drown them in my evil trap chamber of doom.

Adventure 1) This is because breaking parts requires a JOINT body part.  There are no joints defined for non humanoids.  You could mod them in fairly easily though.

For butchering, use Dwarf Companion.

Aha, thanks guys. Joints are coming soon to non-humanoids anyway, though, right? At any rate I'll wait for the new release to try any modding like that.

And I'd rather not use any utilities during normal gameplay - I used Regional Prospector to try to learn more about the way features are placed (key word being 'try', as they seem to be utterly random) and to pick the site for my Succession game, and that's it. But thanks - that is indeed the one I noted on the DFW utility page with the 'nefarious cheating' description. =P

In answer to your question about working with magma (or water), the main thing you need to know is that channels work much differently in the 3D version. The wiki probably has the best explanation, but the tl:dr version is that digging a channel takes out the floor and the wall section beneath it.

code:

##############
WWW#
##############

So in the above example, you'd dig right up to the edge of the water, then go to the floor above and channel out the last square to let it flow down the tunnel. This is the most basic way to transfer liquids, read up on floodgates and pumps if you want to doom your fortress in more advanced ways.
