The apocalypse. What will become of DF?
« on: June 06, 2008, 12:25:00 pm »

http://ipower.ning.com/netneutrality

Every significant Internet provider around the globe is currently in talks with access and content providers to transform the internet into a television-like medium: no more freedom, you pay for a small commercial package of sites you can visit and you'll have to pay for seperate subscriptions for every site that's not in the package.

Provided this is true (I keep hearing about it and don't doubt they would do it), what will become of DF? Our exposure will be throttled, or at least hindered significantly.

Strikes me as scaremongering bullshittery.

Even with a really tight NDA, the sheer number of people who'd need to be involved to commercialise the Internet in such a way would be staggering.  It'd have leaked a lot more than that.

lol, another one who thinks that this will end the distribution of user made content and free forums. Anyone who owns a server has the right to use it within the legal boundaries, and even if this should happen, private websites and usermade content will still exist

OK, let me go over this one more time.

The combined power of the internet > all the attempts to regulate it into a commercialized kind of market. Think of it like TV. We have pay TV but pay TV never managed to topple the titan of the public channels.

I don't believe it would need a staggering amount.
Just research how many owners there are to the major news-networks.

All they have to do is to is take control of key-points of the net.
Like US did to "wiki-leaks".
http://www.wikileaks.be/wiki/Wikileaks
if you are in US, you will need to use this link http://88.80.13.160/wiki/Wikileaks
this, because the DNS for this URL was blocked in US.
(NB: They even keep changing the IP for this site.)

UPDATE(5 min later):
Had actually not validated this for a while, but it seems the DNS
is again accessible from US. My bad.

If the internet goes down it's taking western civilization with it.

Seriously, it's about 10 years too late to even think about doing this. The stray cat (tame) is out of the -horse leather bag-.

The Mayans predicted this, it's the reason their calender ends during this year. That's why they went back into space and made their own internet, and no they wont let you use it.

I don't know who needs to cut down on Dwarf fortress most...

You, for doing the cat(tame) thing...
or me, for actually laughing heartily at it.

Ugh, laissez faire capitalism makes me sick. Every article discussing commercialization of the internet always reminds me of a cyberpunk mentality and the innate feeling advanced users have toward toppling authoritarian influences.

It's in December, and that's a misconception. Other Mayan calendars have been found that extend thousands of years past 2012. Of course that's not going to get in the way of people making a fuss about the date.

Goodness... We survived soo many apocolipses already I am surprised people still care.

I mean, Nostradomus' (or however you spell his name) vision of the apocolips (which in fact didn't end the world if you read it) could have already happened over 9 times already apperantly.

Net neutrality does threaten the ease of access to free expression on the internet but doesn't stand to destroy it entirely.

The people who don't pay kickbacks to get priority service would just get slower, wonkier connections to those trying to connect... at least in the implementation that ISP's are all currently wet-dreaming about.

Thankfully nobody's government seems likely to be stupid enough to allow that currently, and in the US such a think would never see the light of day as long as organizations like the EFF are out there and properly equipped to combat it.

The EFF fights for net neutrality the way Chuck Norris fights for sheer badassery.

People love a good apocalypse looming over them, though... makes a good motivator to keep things in order in the present.

It likely can't be bad for the economy either.
