A Few Questions...
« on: July 28, 2008, 07:00:24 pm »

1. Is there any way to attract more wild animals to yourself for training?
2. Any suggestions for training?
3. If I do not get attacked by an encounter, does that mean there are no wild animals in the area? For example can I go and explore the area to find animals even if I am not attacked.
4. Is there any currency, or is trading just a bunch of guesswork.
5. What are valuable trade goods?
6. Is there any particular reason for providing service to mayors and kings and such?
7. Can I get meat from dead animals, or only from purchases?
8. Is there anyway to train noncombat skills like woodcutting? (doubt it)
9. Is there anyway to more quickly recruit teammates?
10. Why is it that when I play in year 60 its so hard to recruit, but in year 10 it isn't? (My guess is that they have settled more in year 60 and have a family and such.)
New Questions (edit): 11. Can you steal/rob people?

Thats about it. Please help with any questions you can. Please also provide the number(s) that you answered. Thanks!

1. I don't think so.
2. Lie down in a pack of wolves and watch your shield skill skyrocket.
3. You can run around and occasionally find wild animals, but it doesn't happen often.
4. There is, but it's unique for each civilization, so it's pretty much impossible to get enough to buy something.
5. Cave Spider Silk clothing from dead goblins.
6. They tell you where megabeasts live.
7. No.
8. No.  Next version, though.
9. You have to be more powerful than them to recruit them.
10. See above, they've had fifty extra years to train.
11. You can kill people and take their stuff, or take things from shops, but the guards attack you.

Thanks. Most of those were disappointing answers. They were helpful though. Could you expand on the currency topic? Also when will the next release be? Will it take me 50 game years to get more powerful than one of those dudes?

Inquisitive one, eh?

Each civilization has its own currency, you can't trade using a different civilization's currency. Cave Spider Silk garments are like liquid assets in DF. You can trade them anywhere and they are worth a lot.

It will probably take you 4-5 hours to be reasonably powerful. 9-10 to be nearly unbeatable. If you know what to do. Look back on Cthulhu's post for valuable suggestions.

And now, a Syrealian proverb:

God-like power seems to be the only thing worth fighting for when you first start your quest as an adventurer, but when you obtain it, it shall be your only reason to die.

Ponder that one.

Thanks for the help. So pretty much I have to play for 9-10  :o hours to be able to rampage wherever/whenever I want? Dang the people of the DF community are committed. Nice.

Or... build a fort, make awesome equipment, and pick it up as an adventurer.  That really helps things along.

Or learn to realise that losing is fun.

In a fat-fingered moment while setting up another military squad I accidentally created a captain of the guard rather than a militia captain.  His squad of near-legendary hammerdwarves equipped with high quality silver hammers then took it upon themselves to dispense justice to all the mandate breakers in the fortress.  It was quite messy.

It sure is, but it's much more fun to lose after you've spent hours buffing a character :)

Some people get so powerful that nothing could stop them.
They 'lose' by jumping into molten rock, or into casms to spare themselves from finding someone that can actually defeat them.

Hold on, did someone say 9-10 hours of training? Wow... How did you manage to take that sort of time?

Normally I can pump a character to a good level (legendary shield and armour) in about 20 minutes. Then it just takes a bit of zombie choking to get legendary wrestler. The weapon is likely that hardest to pump, but by that time I'm normally strong enough to take on towns and I just run in and slaughter everyone.

Note that no matter how powerful you are, you are still at a reasonable risk of being killed by pesky ranged attackers.

Actually, multilegendary shield users wielding a half-dozen shields or so are effectively immune to damage. I have happily stood around in forest retreats cleaving the limbs of melee elves until the bowelves all around had exhausted their arrows and closed to within axe range. The main issue with this is that getting zerged by an entire forest retreat all at once tends to leave you over-exerted in a few turns, which is bad for the survival.
