Eh, it took me a HELL of a lot of stuff to buy my first stupid anvil...of course now that I have that I can make lots of nice metal things...and I'm now cranking out crappy rock products to throw in mass at traders...but I think there's plenty of challenges..of course i'm on my 3rd fort and it's built horribly...but a girzzly bear still messed my people up till I sent my patrolling warriors there...god bless steel.

Eh, DF is hard enough depending on how you play.

Take me, for example! Playing without Traps and using only 1 Marksdwarf for every 5 melee dwarves. Even better: making a surface village with many possible entrances until I can build a true castle.

Going pretty hard so far (catching thieves is hard enough). Shield training is going to be essential against bow/crossbowgoblin. Let's see how long it lasts.  :P

I have a very large outside program with many walls/gates...my next migrant herd will all (the peasants and useless skills) be hearded into the military so I can keep two guards on each outside entrance (I just had a goblin somehow get in and run away with...something or other...I hope it wasn't a baby..

I think codezero is saying that after a fortress has gone on for a while, it is no longer challenging to run it without delibrately handicapping yourself.

Perheaps one should be able to select diffuculty levels?

On the other hand, the goal of most fortresses is not to survive, but to achieve. To build a massive cathedral, to stage epic duels within an arena surrounded by a lava most, to design overelaborate deathtraps for dwarves and goblins alike.

And carp taming. Don't forget carp taming.

The constructive part is the second paragraph of the OP. The first is background/evidence.

Maybe a little late as this post is several pages back but...

No, the OP is not constructive. It is hyperbolic and aggressive. Constructive criticism requires a problem to be identified and then a solution proposed. Starting a thread with "shit" right in the title and repeating the word "fuck" in subsequent posts is not a way to show that you wish to help.

As for the game, well, it's a sandbox. There's no real goal other than to create. If you can't think of anything to make it's probably best to give it a rbeak for a while. Maybe return a couple of releases later when there are new features and new nifty things to check out.

Anyone who complains about DF being easy ought to read the wiki and just mod the game to be more difficult - or learn to play in terrifying aquifers. Anyone who thinks it's too difficult should read the wiki and mod it to be easier - or learn to play.

Drama.

Ahwell... that is exactly what started me up. I'd been playing a fortress for a couple of days and when I finally got sieged I mopped 'em up with no challenge. Then I thought, well gee how long is it gonna be 'till the next one? Fortunately it came soon after, (i'd already posted tho) and they had a lot more units. They soon found a hole in my fortifications and would've wiped me out if they hadn't retreated at the first sight of resistance. Sheilas.

Still though, looking forward to tracked item trading, real army sieging, native gaming.

As for harder to come by food and personality pleasing, that's on my wishlist but I guess further down the track.

Ecstatically yours,
CodeZero

It's very easy to make food harder to come by, just make all the food have double the growing time. It's a matter of changing one number for each one in matgloss_plants.txt.

As for sieges, just keep playing. They get much harder.

If people would remember to chill out it would be helpful for everybody.  codezero and Torak, that is.

Agreed. Discussions should be mature on this forum. I mean look at the title of this topic even... ::)

Quite. Usually when I post on any forum I act my age.... well, no, probably older. But, when there is that sort of invitation you just don't pass it up.

Man I love ad hominem.

Anyway, if you're willing to berate a game in alpha after playing one fort for a couple days, especially in a way that provides no real constructive feedback or suggestions...I'm just going to hope for some ADHD or something.  [This is more in response to the first half o' the thread]

Dwarf Fortress is only as challenging as you make it.  People whine about empty moats and cage traps being able to stop anything.  Well guess what, stop using them and maybe it'll be more difficult.  Dwarf Fortress isn't so much about winning as it is about playing god, doing whatever tickles your fancy.  Goals must be set by the player, and if you aren't having fun with a particular goal, try something else.

Dwarf Fortress is far from perfect or finished, but it's a hell of a lot more than most games have to offer.
