Mythril was mined in the Age of Myths, see.

I think it would be a mighty fine thing if mithril was treated the way Tolkien made it.

But this is Toady's game. If he wants to make a different mithril, i won't try to stop him or even complain. I think that's why he's stayed away from using it so far, so as not to make a mockery of Tolkien's work. Just don't make it purple for goodness sakes.

Adamant(ine) is a staple of really old myths in real life, a metal as strong as diamond (thus the convergence with the names), so i approve of it's portrayal in DF, for all that matters.

Similar metals which could be used are orichalcum and meteoric steel. Both have featured in real world myths/legends and would thus fit well in a fantasy setting like DF. Once again, no purple orichalcum. It's red. Look it up.

I would like orichalcum. Especially if it had firey properties. And meteor showers would be a nice random event.

There's no such thing as Adamantine in DF. It's a rumor. A lie, like cake. there is none.

oh I'm sure he won't tell us specifically.  But it will only take a matter of minutes for it to be spoiled for everyone else here on the forums.

Orichalcum is red? Damn, how did I miss that? I thought it was gold colored. Guess I should go update my mod...

A little more on topic, I'm all for Toady adding in a bunch of cool sounding stuff that he just makes up. Fewer arguments that way.

To get technical for just a second, adamantine (known officially as adamantine spar) is a real world mineral. To be precise it is a type of corundum. This of course is interesting to think about as most legends portray adamantine as a metal when in real life it is a crystal (closely related to ruby). I digress though as it is indeed quite hard (a 9 on the mohs scale... diamond is 10) so it fits well enough. Anyhow enough with the realism here (as I am sure I am boring you all).

I generally agree with you in that there is no issue having various types of metals and I don't mind what toady does with them (it is his game). I am also a bit more conservative in my thinking here in that I would prefer it to follow the classic depictions. However, I am just as happy if he takes it a whole new direction (even more so if he uses entirely new materials).

Know what I think would be awesome? A rock... you can BREW IN A FORGE! The ultimate Dwarven drink!

Or possibly Mana streams in particularly green areas, some kind of rare crystal in deserts...

I'd think one advantage to being out of a mountain biome could be directly tied into the underground diversity thing. Burrowing creatures etc. are more likely to live away from mountains, in soil layers and below them. I'd love to see thriving underground biomes be more common in forests and plains, myself. That becomes a bit HFSy
