EA Mythic developers playing Dwarf Fortress?
« on: June 06, 2008, 10:40:00 am »

One of the producers has a video blog. In March, he had this entry, "Name the Game and Win." It looks like DF, to me.

Oh yea, it's DF

Not a very interesting dark-rock cliff face, with the minimap open to the side.

Perhaps he just embarked? Thats the only time I have it open.

I would bet money Andrew has edited things retroactively, except I can't prove anything because it was edited retroactively.

Noooo, the prize is entrance into the closed beta for Warhammer Online, you don't want to distract him with that, do you?

Yeh, Warhammer Online is fantasy.  It does have steampunk dwarves, however.  Lots of goggles and random gears.

No clue. I'm guessing not. DF only became semi-popular very recently, and not many actually watch Paul's video blog.

"It does have steampunk dwarves"

Warhammer Fantasy has everything. Too bad many of the interesting features of the Pen and Paper game will never make it into the MMO. (Like the Goblins mutation causing Catapults... Sure they probably will have the Catapults... but not the mutation part)

Maybe not to the extent Dungeons and dragons have it (where the world is Sci-fi and stone age at the same time in most settings)

I think Warhammer Online is going to have the mosty badass Dwarves ever. They get jetpacks that use alcohol as fuel!

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

I wonder why 40k doesn't have dwarves. They have every other race in some form or another but dwarves aren't there. You'd think the Adeptus Mechanicus would be a bunch of dwarves but nope.

They did for a while. They were called Squats. However, they weren't very popular, so they were discontinued. Their homeworld was eaten by the Tyranids.

Look at the average Space Marine.  Notice how he seems unusually stout for a human?  That's because they're not genetically modified humans, they're genetically modified dwarves who were made taller.

The Emperor himself is a dwarven noble who has avoided certain death by never moving from one spot, which cannot contain a spike trap since there's a chair in the way.  He sits upon his golden throne and continually makes mandates for conquered planets.

And all those psykers who die every day?  They're not powering his throne, they're victims of typical dwarven justice when a conquered planet mandate reaches its end unfulfilled.  Why do you think the inquisitors all carry hammers?

The space dwarves have devoted their lives to keeping this secret safe from the more common inhabitants of Terra, the humans.  Since they are in fact different species, the dwarves feel no remorse in purging "heretical" humans who happen to be on the same planet that the dwarves are capturing.

The forces of Chaos are just the result of the enormous adamantine motherlode that the dwarves dug up millenia ago, and that's why the "Space Marines" are so intent on destroying them.  Nurgle is one friggin' huge frog demon, and Tzeentch is lord of tentacle demons (Slaanesh happened to butt in on their creation, which led to those interesting "corrupt intentions").

Any more questions?
