DF is taking over my miiiiiiiiind
« on: September 11, 2007, 03:13:00 pm »

I was up last night working on a game character description for one of my classes.

I skimmed over it this morning and was amused that I had written this in the appearance description:
"The pouch is made of sturdy cloth with bands of leather. Engraved in the leather is an image of a Viking and an unidentified knight. The Viking is swinging at the knight with his axe. The knight is fearfully crouched."

(yes, I'm currently going to school for game development.)

I've had dreams about DF  :( it was about the new ver, and everything was in 3d. and the naked mole dogs just wouldn't stop pouring out of the chasm  :( and there were really nasty things outside so i actually had to hide my dwarfs in a cave inside. was rather scary.

I can't say that it has creeped into my mind like that, but it DOES stay in the back of my head like a tumor or something of that ilk.

Sometimes, when I have nothing better to do at work, some kind of plan or map pop in my mind and then I nod, saying to myself "Yup, that would be a nice improvement on my current design"...

Fortunatly, nobody started to think I'm crazy or something... Yet.  :p

I sometimes find myself playing the game in my dreams, with the digging designations and everything, or planning out the near future of my fortress while I'm half-awake.

It's been a while since I've been immersed enough in the game for it to permeate my soul like that. Once the next version comes out, I'll be there again, I'm sure.

I had a dream last night actually, where I was explaining to someone how cool DF and Toady are.

And I haven't even played it recently (fasting for the new version)

I did have a DF dream once. I recall digging out this area (Dwarf mode) with some miners and suddenly a cave-in struck and and pushed some guy a few tiles away and gave him some damage. I then remember somehow being in 1st person in a room with some other dwarves. I think we were fighting goblins.

Anyway, the parts of the dream I clearly remember:
I was back in normal dwarf mode overseeing my fortress, then without warning, a permaflood tears across my fort, killing all my dwarves.
Before I knew it, I was in 3rd person again (assumably adventure mode this time), with a Oblivion-esque graphics engine. I was swimming through my great hall, the water crystal clear so that I could not only see the engraved floors (+'s), but dead dwarves slowly floating to the surface. One popped up next to me and its arm and fingers started wriggling and jerking, but my mind attributed this to Oblivion's funny physics engine.
I hit a dry area and consciously wondered "What happened to the babies?". Soon I  imagined they were zombie demon babies... with guns.
Then I saw what resembled an oblivion goblin, and it had a pistol. Unfortunately for him, he had it upside down, shooting himself through his chest and into a tower cap (which actually looked like a normal tree, but the misty atmosphere and being still inside the cave indicated to me it was the underground forest). The tree started falling over, and this totally random human runs past me and right under the tree and gets squashed. Dumb party member I guess :P

Man I'm weird. :P

My dreams lately have regularly been in ASCII, no word of a lie.  They are mostly a cross between Dwarf Fortress and Nethack, with elements of my real life thrown in.  My insomniac hours of trying to fall asleep are filled with exhausted analysis of what ASCII symbols would be used to represent various people, places, and things in my life...

Then again, years ago I used to dream in Tetris.  Maybe I'm just weak-minded?
