[39e] Running out of wildlife?
« on: July 27, 2008, 05:53:45 am »

I had four hunters working for some time, bringing in deer, fox, hoary marmots and mountain goats. Counting the skull totems I figure they killed about 200-300 animals in total. Now, for a very long time, 2-3 years probably, there has been no new wildlife at all, only the few imps, magma men and cave swallows there have been since the beginning. The wiki doesn't mention anything about wildlife becoming depleted. Anyone else had this happen?

If we assume that fortress mode runs on the same fixed animal numbers system as worldgen, then yes, it's possible to run out of animals to kill.

But you'd have to kill these many:
Code: [Select]
Outdoor Animal Populations (Including Undead)
27410 peregrine falcons
15277 turkey vultures
4398 wombats
30894 rabbits
1160 cougars
17674 partridges
41382 rhesus macaques
12954 horses
10748 pandas
32302 muntjacs
29005 lesser mousedeer
25225 raccoon dogs
697 barghests
1580 werewolves
2382 nightmares
1408 wendigos
7968 harpies
692 ogres
59784 red pandas
20784 coyotes
4596 lynxes
25886 groundhogs
23966 giant mantises
12036 jackalopes
3745 short-faced bears
4176 elk
3948 kit foxes
14905 hares
...

A lot of people report hunting things to extinction but I personally see it as attributing the wrong systems to the diagnosis. Do you have animals caged up? Are some animals loitering about someplace you can't see? Do you have a lot of animals (including tame ones) on the map?

I've never really seen this happen myself. But my oldest forts are only 20 years old.

They ran out when the fort was only four years old, tops. I do have quite a lot of tame animals around though, I'll try to slaughter some.

Yeah its quite possible if your hunters are clearing the area. I think wildlife should be regenerated over time.

Seconded; this always happened whenever I had a hunter or two - after 3-4 years of continuous hunting wildlife would cease to appear. (38c, haven't gotten far enough in 39 yet)

Do you think that having too many animals would also prevent fish (and turtles, etc.) from respawning? I'm on year 6 and haven't been able to catch anything for about 2 years, but I do have a ton of animals.

On a related note, if I switch my farm plots off for a year or two to get rid of my excess food and booze and free up stockpile space, will the seeds go stale in the seed stockpile or not? Right now it feels sort of pointless to slaughter the livestock when I have huge amounts of food to start with.

I have noticed being able to rapidly deplete the surrounding wildlife with only a few hunters, and once you kill all the animals there's simply nothing more to hunt, but this has been going on since the last version.

It seems animals in the wild don't breed or something. The rate at which I hunt them should be easily sustainable for a breeding population.

Agreed.  I had two part-time (very part-time) hunters that cleared a forest (as far as I can tell) within maybe 2 years [40d].  If the forest isn't extinct, then they suddenly refused to Hunt from one moment to the next for reasons entirely beyond me.

It took me a long time to figure out why they'd sit around with No Job, too, then I started looking for animals.  It seems odd to me that the hunters would know, from their warm bedrooms, that the entire forest is extinct.

At the very least, I expected them to be out hunting and not finding anything.

Phik, this topic is from summer of 2008.  It's 2009.  Drop it.  We're up to version 40dx now.  This bug probably doesn't exist anymore.

It hasn't been fixed in any sense, wildlife populations are still static and don't reproduce (the fix is slated for the nearish future on dev_next).  ToonyMan probably just has an extremely high population in his area.
