Err... Build a well. Don't designate trees to be cut near rivers. Be careful with outside refuse hauling, switch it on only when you need to and control dwarves carefully in such moments. And designate a water source somewhere far away from the river.

Another possibility is to start with the brook instead of river/stream if you want running water, brooks don't contain any big fish.

Build a tunnel from the water source to the inside of your fort. Then dig out the last square connecting it to the river and it will fill with water. Dorfs can then use a well to drink from the water source, or drink from it directly if its just 1 Z level lower, but wells give happy thoughts.

You can also add in fortifications inside the tunnel to prevent large critters from swimming through the water into the well, and you only need to risk a dorf one time, and thats to dig out the very last square connecting the dry tunnel to the water source.

Alternatively, you can set up an overlook onto the river and have some live fire training for your marksdorfs.

Just be careful, I'd consider training their swimming skill first.
Also if you station marksdwarves, note that they're 1 level above the river so there's a small dead zone near the bank, carps may sneak through it to your dwarves... And usually it's fatal. Fish do not "drag" dwarves "in" but the dwarves charge at fish/dodge into river which leads to stunned beardy man flowing with the water (it is usually a death sentence).

A cliff overlooking the river or a constructed tower would be ideal for marksmen training, however. Just so long as you have a way to keep the dorfs from pathing to the carp and keep the carp 2 or more tiles away from the marksmen, they will be perfectly safe. Even a tower just 1 level high is enough to get the job done. For extra safety, you could have no surface exit to the tower, instead having stairs and an underground tunnel back to your fort, such that there would be hundreds of squares to walk to be in danger of a carp attack. Just have an amply supply of bolts on hand.

Its funny how the rivers run red.  ;D

i'm trying something new now. in a season i think there are no big fish, i haven't noticed any, i'm building floors over the whole river ;D. i hope it will keep my dwarfies from drowning

i also made a well inside now, dug the river into the fortress, made fortifications in it (fish can't swim trough, right?) and floored the tiles before teh fortifications too. i hope my water supply is fish-free now.

This is my favourite way of defence. The only danger in this case are enemy marksmen and fortifications reduce their chance to hit.

Yes, but thats no fun.

I want to mod various animals so they're all bloodthristy and ultra aggressive...but I keep procrastinating doing that. Gotta have some challenge. I'll get around to that a bit later on, probably.

Any reason why so many dwarves are trying to drink water? The little buggers want booze!

But still, you want water for your wounded, drain some water into a basin (cistern) so they can drink in peace as is mentioned above.

I always keep my dwarves away from any body of water... that wasn't constructed by me..well them...

Are you kidding? I modded my carp so instead of having 1-6 damage, they have 100-600, LOADS of fun when you get a river full of carp.
