Children Stay Inside
« on: July 26, 2008, 02:19:56 am »

Title says it all. A command that makes children stay inside, for those times when you know there are snatchers on the loose.

Nothing is more annoying than having to halt your outside labor to keep the lil buggers inside because they just insist on following mommy out across the map to pick up a piece of wood.

Right now I know theres several snatchers around (framerate always drops when they come) but even with military dwarves going all over the place I haven't uncovered them all in an entire season, and they already grabbed one child who wandered out after the wood hauler.

This should also help prevent the lil buggers from running out to see their parent while in the middle of a fight. One of my legendary fighters has had 3 of her kids die to stray arrows while they were going to see her mid fight. (funnily enough, the babies she carries into battle have never even been injured).

-edit- Whoops, I meant to post this in Suggestions. Clicked the wrong forum. Thats what I get for posting at 3am. :)

All the more reason for corrals... one for livestock, another for the children. :)

Maybe assigning dogs to the children would give a better chance of the snatchers being detected before they can grab them.

I still agree it would be a good idea to be able to keep them inside.

I don't think children can have dogs assigned to them? Doesn't their 'p' screen just say something like "a child does as it pleases!"?

Ah maybe - I've never actually tried so it might not be possible.

Didn't I read that now children and animals will ignore the "stay inside" command?

Yep, berserk dwarves obeying the stay inside command was reported as a bug and fixed. Since the little bastards^W lovely children are similarly uncontrollable the fix applies to them as well.

Children stay inside and go to school.

Learn a trade and go from dabbeling to novice. A nice way to keep them from the streets. And if they wander of and get killed. The hammerer would need to talk with the teacher of the school.  ::)

A better way to turn a farmers population into a craftsdwarf population?

It's also strange that you can't design a guard house/city gate to limit the acces to and from the city. Only those with wealth get inside/bribe/passport?
A new noble job Gatekeeper?

Dwarf children have to be the single most suicidal creatures out there.

All they do in my fort is aimlessly wander the hills on the opposite side of the map. And die. Oh boy, do they die.
