Confused Merchants - "Has embarked" but hasn't
« on: July 26, 2008, 01:06:00 am »

Merchants don't seem to be able to leave after their animals are killed. I had a goblin ambush pop out and kill the elven caravan's animals. (2 elves with a mule and a donkey, now just 2 elves) and they stopped trading with me (says no merchants on the trade depot) and when the embarked message came they are still standing in the depot. I assume they're trying to pack up but can't due to the lack of animals.

It's been a season so far and they haven't moved, and all the items in the depot are still marked [T].

Deconstruct the depot. That will make all the trader items yours, which you should have done earlier anyway - they're elves!

If you think about it, the lack of leaving makes sense, have you ever tried carrying 30 bins of leather and logs?

Yeah, I already deconstructed. Was just saying they don't leave on their own.

Maybe the behavior should be if pack animals dead, grab the most valuable stuff that you can personally carry and leave with that.

Simple and sensible.

Or, if you'd want to make it more complicated (this being Dwarf Fortress and all), one of the merchants could go have a meeting with the mayor or broker and ask for new work animals to replace the ones they had, arguing that the fort's poor defenses are to blame. If refused they might offer to trade for new animals.

Or they could refuse to leave their goods, make a semi-permanent camp up in a corner of the map, haul all their stuff there and send a messenger back home to fetch new animals.

Or they could pick up the most valuable goods and ask the player to guard the rest until they can come back and get it.

Or they could set fire to the stuff they can't carry, purely out of spite. :p

Their disembark from the trade depot may have put them on top of a tile normally impassible to them. I had this happen in the old 38's. I had to deploy my engravers to smooth over the boulders that they were sitting on before they moved.
