Suggestion for improved Seiges: Goblin Seige Weapons!
« on: July 25, 2008, 11:09:57 pm »

I think it would be a great idea if the almighty toady one gave the goblins access to Catapults and balistas. They could be the same size as a wagon and could have the same travelability as a wagon. Ironic that a road also brings your enemies. The catapults could destroy walls. Also I think the sieges should last longer and bring more goblins based on location or something.

Just my 0.02$ worth :)

Just catapults would be good enough. (Able to bring down walls already, right?)

And, the possibility for goblins to build floors over moats to reach your bridges (and break them)

I would like this, as long as they don't come too early on.

They could come in the 5th year or trigger at 120 population. As for building structures I would not like that because then that would be kinda like h4x.

Three words:
Troll Stone Throwers.
Catapults are overrated when trolls throw boulders like adventurers throw pebbles.

It'd be cool to give siege parties the option of building makeshift bridges over areas they can't get across like moats, ditches, and chasms. They could start chopping down trees outside or roll up a wagon that has the supplies they need. Not necessarily a siege weapon, but something that would make sieges more interesting and possibly harder.

Yep, I guess many similar threads were created before with all of these suggestions what you guys have posted so far. I guess the Combat Arc might give us better sieges, or maybe the "advanced" Army Arc.

One day we will be able to make our own gruesome sculptures.

I especially like your suggestion Davion btw, to allow siegers to bypass moats somehow. [allow them to construct bridges etc.] I guess Ive made a suggestion like that before even hehe.

Catapults would be ineffective with standard, underground dwarf fortress, as there's nothing to aim at.

The effective tactics could include:
  • digging
  • blowing up the entrance (booze bombs?)
  • covert infiltration
  • flooding the fortress (it takes a river, a pump, some pipes and a goblin engineer)
  • open assault and trying to defeat the defenders with sheer numbers

An example of a successful attack:

  • First part relies on good intelligence. Goblins try to gather as much information about the enemy installation as possible. If there is a friendly civilization who already knows something about the fortress, some data can be bought. If not, there is another use for baby snatchers. Instead kidnapping bearded brats, they try to scout as much as possible. They could also try to disarm the most troublesome traps or sabotage the fortress in any other way, but it's not the best moment to do it.
  • Goblin troops arrive. They try to secure the surface, killing aby dwarf they can catch. Some are captured instead and tortured to reveal more information about their fortress. Arriving caravans are send back (if the goblins are at peace with the particular kingdom) or robbed.
  • If there are any surface installations, they should be seized or destroyed now. It's a good moment to use catapults, mainly to breach the walls and eliminate the guard towers.
  • Now the trickiest part. As the enemy cannot be starved (unless he has no underground farms, which is unlikely), lowering his morale is hard. But water is even more important and if the dwarves rely only on the brook or a river, they're screwed. Even if the fortress have any wells, the attacker may try to cut off the flow from the surface (but only if he knows where).
  • The fortress is besieged. Meanwhile the covert ops work hard. Thieves attempt to infiltrate the place, then sabotage. If there is a strong leader and a great champion, he should be assassinated. Crops and wells could be poisoned. There are many methods to achieve the same goal and I don't think the goblins would have any scrouples. It's up to the Fortress Guard to stop the enemy infiltrators.
  • Meanwhile, engineering forces try to make some other way to enter the installation. Digging is their primary choice but it may be ineffective in some cases. If the wells are supplied from outside and some attacker units can swim, it's also a valid attack route.
  • If assaulting the place at last seems more effective than besieging, than fine. They try to spring from as many places as possible, including but not limited to, main entrance, secret passages, digged tunnels and wells. When attacking the dwarf-made hallways, every team has at least one thief or engineer, which could dismantle the traps on his way.
  • Flooding the fortress and other drastic measures are valid only when the attacker isn't interested in capturing the place, or no longer believes he's able to do so.
  • The fun part: robbing and killing. Goblin corpsecrafters make a nice sculpture to commemorate their victory.

Goblins salt the farms and poison the rivers :)

I would like it if they had a weapon that could break down floors too, if you don't build your fortress deep enough.  That would encourage building an aboveground castle to protect things like your precious farming areas that are just below the surface.

Actually, I thought something similar to the "thumper" from Pirates of the Caribbean which was used to call the kraken, could be put in place above your fortress.  Then they would bring in trolls to turn the axle and raise the weight, which when released would slam into the ground and collapse the floor, as well as sending a tremor through nearby tunnels giving them a small chance to collapse.  I know it isn't exactly realistic, but it would be impressive to see and pretty awesome.

Earthquakes = temporary change in the support required for things + reduction in the support provided by other things.  (AKA X squares stop providing support at all and the maximum without support cave size is changed from 7 down to Y)

Thumper = localized earthquake.

eh?

Yeah, that sounds like a good way to implement it.  I just thought goblins should have some kind of dwarf specific siege weapon since they attack them all the time, and it isn't like just tossing rocks at a wall because the dwarves are far below the surface.

Not just at walls, also at fortifications, doors, bridges, traps, and other buildings, not to mention hapless dwarves.
Marksdwarf shoots troll, impaling it in the lower leg. Enraged troll throws boulder at marksdwarf, flattening his face.
