Some weird obsidian...
« on: July 25, 2008, 07:25:58 pm »

So, I came across this odd feature on my newest map.

The second image is from directly below; obviously, it's not magma or obsidian below it. I haven't gone down another level yet, but I didn't see magma on the world map (I have it set to show always), so I don't think there is any. Why is this here?

EDIT: That's jet in the second image, not obsidian.
EDIT2: Maybe it's from underground water of some sort? That looks like about where there should be some, according to the map. Anyway, not really important. Apparently trade depots have to be seven squares from the edge, not five, destroying my entire OCD floorplan. So much for that map!

Wacky  ???  It's like you've got a veneer of obsidian over some jet.  I've never seen that sort of mismatch before.

I have a patch of forest (near the edge of a moutain) in my current for where no trees or bushes grow. just grass. :-\

Keep digging down, it should be magma, since those are magma rock types.

This is normal. The floor on one level has no relation to the layer below.

Oh... I get it :-[  It's no different than subsurface layers.

Well, negative magma according to the world map. I suppose it might have been there.

Anyway, I've never seen a circle of obsidian floor like that. Not exactly what I'd call 'normal' at any rate.

It's just a circle of a mineral layer, obsidian appears as separate layers/clusters (without magma), once I had a multi-level fortress carved inside of a single obsidian rock formation, and there were no magma. It happens rarely.

I have seen this before... on my current map made in version 39e.  At first, when I saw it, I thought "this must be the solidified "cap" of a magma pipe, horray!"

So I dug a few levels down...
and rather than magma, it turned out to be a bottomless pit!

It was still kinda neat though.

Jet is sedimentary, not igneous.

Yes, i have had the exact same thing, a bottomless pit with aparantly an obsidian cap.

Well that kind of makes sense if you think about it. A 'bottomless' pit could be the remains of a former magma pipe that has receeded. That would explain the magma cap.

Yup there's a bottomless pit below it. I've got one on my current map.

Actually, in my current fortress, I have a bottomless pit. When I began, I knew I had a magma pipe, and to my surprise, I saw two circles of magma jutting out of the surface. In actuality, one was the true magma pipe, the other was a bottomless pit with a layer of 7/7 magma on the lid. It wasn't solidified so I can guess that what everyone else is experiencing with a cap of obsidian over pits were magma. It's obviously a bug but the worst it can do is pour right above your expedition crew... which it did to me.
