Aquifer Absorbtion rate?
« on: July 25, 2008, 04:35:17 pm »

Just a quick question, How fast can aquifer absorb water?  Also, do they absorb water from the side or only from the top?
(All the following are side views)
Code: [Select]
#2#
AA1__
#####
A=Aquifer
# = Wall
_ = channel, no aquifer in surrounding
1 and 2 = where water will reach
Given the above
Will water from both 1 and 2 be absorbed?  or just 2?  Because in the past I've embarked in a desert with two separate regions, one has a multi-level aquifer while the other does not.  And I tried to versions...
Code: [Select]
Version 1
########
AA1___ #
AA##__ __ <-Water fall here
AA2____#
AA######
########
Code: [Select]
Version 2
########
AA1___ #
AA##__ __ <-Water fall here
AA#___ #
AA2____#
########
Version 1 does not appear to flood, but will splash out 1/7 water in square next to the hole in the ground.  Version 2 does not seems to drain at all (or very slowly) and will fill up the space above before overflowing

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.

I can answer part of your question, but not all:

The aquifer will absorb as much water as falls into it.  I know this from experiments with draining the ocean: every tile of ocean that is above the aquifer -- but not supported by ground -- will fall into it instantaneously.

Thank you.  So the aquifer floor will absorb near infinite water?

As I understand it an aquifer is an infinite source and an infinite sink, making it an infinitely useful and infinitely annoying feature.  So, yes.  It will absorb as much water as you care to drop onto, or pump into it.

Thanks!!

I now have an aquifer powered pump + waterfall.

Ah, dwarven perpetuum mobile designs :).
Also note that if you're trying to empty an ocean or a river in the aquifier it may lead to a HUGE framerate drop. You were warned.
