All you have to do is make a really deep moat and any efforts at tunneling into your fort are doomed.

Hm true...well perhaps the siegers could make bridges over moats? Well I guess it would require a decent AI.

Well, we would need to wait for burrows to be implemented, this would allow the AI to judge the boundaries of fortresses better. There are also problems with the jumping, tunnelling ideas in that how the AI is to determine the pathfinding for such situations and if how it should base it's decisions wether a straight entrance to the fort is a good decision or wether it should think ahead about possible traps set up for them.

Fill the moat with lava.

Nay, make the moat 2 squares wide like this:

Side View
Code: [Select]
g  X- Ha ha, can't get me now!
#  #
##~#
####
Where ~ is lava or water. If they jump across, they fall into the lava, if they tunnel once, they walk in and cant get anywhere, if twice, they burn.
Floorers might pose a threat, but then, make a double moat:

Code: [Select]

#  #~#
##~###
######
Where ~ is lava. Floorers make it past #1 then have their floors burn up on the second (I think that they'd be wooden, what's the chance of a goblin lugging around a lump of rock during a siege eh?)

I saw they the seigers bribe any dwarves who have a personality of being greedy and make them pull the levers to activate the bridges.

Yeah, this would require a very good AI for sure...also I think bridges could easy work to bypass moats. Lava wont be a problem, just construct the bridge +1 z level. Also there can be an option for the siegers to fill in moats for example.

The easiest way to fix sieges would be to allow gobbo crossbows to damage drawbridges and for broken drawbridges to fall back down as bridges. And nerf traps.

For a little more effort you could make catapults (working similarly to wagons) that could attack drawbridges, once again causing them to fall back down as bridges.

But... I use bridges the other way.  They cover over a path from below when they're down, and allow people through when they're up.  That fix wouldn't help.

so I think common wisdom on megabeasts is wrong.

Totally.  I had a visit from a colosus well before 80.  A dragon showed up soon after, I was at about 75 pop.

It was pretty epic...  goblin seige, a snather, master thief and top it off with the freaking dragon.  Thought I would get smoked but we held the line.  Killed the dragon, won the seige, killed the thief and the snatcher ran.  Only lost 6!!!

Train!  Train!  Train!  I am a big proponent of training all my dwarfs.  Maybe not my legendary crafters and I pardon a small corp of farmers/brewers/butchers/cook (and one miner) but everyone else trains.  I didnt even mobilize my entire corps.  Only my main full time sheriff's brigade, two auxiliary brigades, my xbow brigade, a couple smaller units and my miner brigade!!!  Miners are bad a$$, they are fairly awesome when mobilized - it was my sheriffs brigade and the miners who destroyed the dragon!

I'm vindicated with the victory.  I wasnt sure if part-time militias would get slaughtered in a heavy seige...  But they held up and am sure contributed to our success.

Hang on a sec though- lowered drawbridges are not indestructible! Trolls will be able to demolish this and enter your fort anyway...

I have to say I'm not crazy about the idea of siegers sapping walls or other tunneling operations.  my beautiful painstakingly made fort, marred by an ugly random passage.

I'm curious, what are your guy's usual military to civilian ratio? I've got about 18 military dwarves to a 48 population. The squads are 2 3 dwarf crossbows, 1 4 dwarf sword, 1 4 dwarf mace, and 1 4 dwarf ax, is that a good setup?

Well....military is not even needed to have now in DF, since siegers cannot bypass moats etc. However nowadays I dont build moats for example but maintain a quite big military. The sad part is that I rarely have any sieges, and if there is a siege my military is easily wiping out the attackers.
Of course I could just start to work on a mod to make sieges hardcore hard, but its pointless, Im waiting for the army arc to be completed + full tileset gfx support. I will start to work on my TC mod than.
