I broke the 80 pop mark shortly before the dragon attack, but then three of my dwarves died - two from dehydration as it was winter and my well was frozen over and another from... what was it? A cave swallowman?

Another more traditional method of breaching a moat is filling it in. It can be pretty harsh when the enemy is raining arrows down on you, but it works. In a castle you would use siege ladders to climb the walls, but for a subterranian city you're in for some crazy stuff.

I THINK that the game notes your highest ever pop., not your current one.

It's the current one alright; try it. Get a bunch of dwarves, check z status, then kill some, and lo and behold your pop count goes down.

Skizelo told not about "z" number, but about the trigger.
Once enabled, it's not disabled again.
Like with towercaps/magma.

Truely : If you want a more challenging time, go out and meet the gobbos in the field. Or meet them in your entrance hall.  True dwarfs hit things with hammers and rack up many kills!  None of this walling in or moats pffft.

it would be super awesome of the siegers could deal with defenses better but they *cant*. so meeting the gobbos in battle is the only real option.

it is sort of like, you can use a cage trap on a Dragon, but is that truely dwarfly?

I had a dragon attack an 80 population fort, but while I was preparing my defense a lone hammerdwarf jumped on it, hit it once, and killed it.  Then went back to patrolling.  That actually made me sad, since I wanted that fort to burn. heh.

One last thing: I couldn't build a moat as I'm on a map that freezes in the winter, rendering my defenses completely useless to attacks. So I prefer to spend my dwarf labor on traps. :D

You can always make an empty moat, it works just fine. Eh?

A_Fey_Dwarf Claims to have gotten one in a fortress capped at 50 Pop. That means it didn't breach the 80 pop level to trigger 80 pop triggers, so I think common wisdom on megabeasts is wrong.

I like it to send out my military to skirmish ... but I did build walls and a drawbridge.

Because I just don't enjoy watching my squad of champion&legendary hammerdwarves being used as a pincushion.

If I see (x)bows on the enemy, they can trade shots with my marksdwarves... ofcourse they are behind fortifications. No bows insight... its hammatime!

Still a fun dragon story OP. The one dragon I saw ran up to my fortress got a bolt between the eyes in the first 5seconds of getting in range. A good thing back then as I really wanted that fort to burn to a crisp back then. Looking back though, that might of been fun too.

Maybe we could have a [JUMPER] tag? Where they will be able to jump over a one-tile wide water or magma tile?

Jump to where? What if theres no open space on the other side of the moat?  ;D
Either way Im pretty sure that we will see much more improved sieges once the full army arc is implemented.
Personally I really like the idea of siegers tuneling into your fortress for example...or siege weaponry would be also awesome to have.

No matter how much cool gear siegers get, the complexity and flexibility of DF means there will still be ways to exploit the AI into making sieges ineffectual.

I dont agree...just think, what if siegers will tunnel into your fortress and pop up at random locations? Moats will be totally useless than, and traps wont be near as effective as they are now. You will be forced to maintain a decent military in the fortress all the time.
