DRAGON ATTACK in a 77 population fort!

I just got a dragon attack... at a relatively young fort. I have plenty of marksdwarves, but I think this will end very messily and flamily... Updates forthcoming!

UPDATE: So the dragon comes way before my preparations are complete and promptly roasts two poor farmers, boiling away a part of the brook and setting fire to my nearby machinery, which chokes the place in smoke. I blindly grope around and find that the dragon's had it's heart pierced by a bolt, but it's not done yet. It rises up one final time and immolates my armorer, sets fire to my hammerdwarves, and now I have dwarves running around screaming while on fire. I'm doing my best to contain the blaze, but jeez. I shudder to think what would have happened if I hadn't taken him down so quickly.

UPDATE2: Fires out, just in time for a herbalist to die by falling into the river while on fire. Sigh.

UPDATE3: Cancel previous assessment.



And this was one of the most wood-rich maps I've ever been on. At least the fire isn't doubling back, so hopefully not ALL of the trees will burn...

I always build moats and walls first. Makes it very easy to protect against a siege. I also remove all ramps.

You know, I was always wondering what sieges will we have in DF in the future. Right now siegers stand no chance to win, because of defense mechanisms, like moats. Hopefully Toady will manage to code in some decent AI to give us real challenging sieges...I dont know perhaps special sieging units to dig a tunnel so that the siegers will be able to attack from below, or some units should have the ability to construct bridges over the moats, or units who dig into the mountain if they cant find other access to get inside etc.

Because real defenders won't just roll over and skip straight to skirmishing. It makes no sense. We want to actually defend against sieges, not just throw crossbowfodder into the melee.

I think climbing (for walls) and jumping (for moats), not to mention all sorts of siege equipment, are regulars in the suggestion forum for this reason.
And I know that flying isn't as good as it should be at the moment, but will a channel really stop the winged-flamethrower? Anyone care to explain how it effects a creature's pathfinding?

Why use moats and traps to defend against sieges when you can use machine gunners archers instead.

I assume if my fort that I built all out of wood ever got attacked by a dragon it would be instant 'fun'...

It'd be neat if Goblins could have a type of task force which uses crossbow-shot grappling hooks to shoot a rope across the moat and hook onto the top of the walls, which they then climb up, and open the gates/lower the draw-bridge.

Some shots in this direction:

-have the goblins build "floors" (without "", actually) across moats. So that trolls can cross and smash the drawbridges.

-tunneling ability. Meaning, straight horizontal tunnels and one up and one down on the z levels. (and thus, make anti-tunnel defenses a must. Such as, having water/magma traps laying around for unwary goblins to dig into.
Also, depending on the material it should be harder to dig in. Particularily with artificial walls (Akin to Dungeon Keeperīs "fortified wall" rule. IE: itīs easier for the goblins to dig through a sand mountain to your hopeless dwarves-note, this one should be particularily easy to dig through for them. A sand mountain is no realistic defense-, than through a rough rock wall, and itīs easier to dig through a rough rock wall than through a "fortified" whatever-blocks one.

-Make goblins build catapults and try to bring down walls with them?

These would make harder to sit out a siege, I think. Youīd need to engineer some kind of defense at least

I like the idea of different races having different tactics in a siege context.  Goblins rush in and desire slaughter at all costs, so they should have abilities that make that a more realistic option against a fortified entrance.  Elves hide around the entrance and slaughter anyone who comes around, but don't really "siege" in most cases; rather, they just ambush very frequently, so there will almost always be hidden elves wandering around.  Humans turn a "siege" into an actual siege, attempting to starve the fort of resources and force the dwarves outside by preventing access to caravans and migrants; they bring real siege engines in order to attack overland structures, and are even willing to poison the fortress's water source.  And dwarves, of course, use their underground expertise to attack from multiple unexpected directions simultaneously.

77 Pop? Did you ever, at any point, go over 80 pop? I thought you couldn't get Megabeasts short of the 80 pop mark.

Moats are fun, especially when you pull the bridges before you get overloaded with migrants too soon. They starve and die, then I turn them bones into crafts :)
