Taming vermin

i want my own heard of vermin 8)

so i caught some with animal traps, i now have a rat and a large roach. i tamed them, but now they are put in the animal stockpile in their *cages* animal traps. can i free them?

IIRC, first you need to place the cages in question outside of the stockpile, using "b"->"j"--then using "q" you can order your dwarves to release the critters.

thx dude, i thought it only could with normal cages
but i'll try it


and nevermind
they are trapped in ANIMAL traps. which i can't build no more :(

As far as I know, tame vermin can't be released to roam the fortress. You can make them available for adoption, and some dwarf who likes that kind of animal will come take them out and carry them around with him. It will be listed in his inventory.

If you just want to transfer them to cages, you should be able to build an empty cage, press q>a, and the vermin will be on the list of animals that can be assigned to it. Not sure about that, though.

Yes, you can put tamed vermin in usual cages which can be opened.

And the pets idea reminds me of... Minsc and Boo!
Imagine a dwarf berserker killing goblins with his Clever Throwing Hamster (which returns after the throw)!
A Legendary Hamsterdwarf!

SO... if i put vermin in a cage, then open the cage, will they be free? is there hope?  :o

Yes, the hope is here. Just note that they could be eaten by a random dwarf or put into some trap again... If not eaten by cats (I didn't play with tamed vermin enough to notice do cats eat tamed ones).
