[39D] Wagon deconstructs
« on: July 24, 2008, 11:06:47 pm »

I started a new fort on a really cold map, and after two dwarves died within minutes of exposure, the wagon suddenly deconstructed, and all the food, drink, and seeds that were on it vanished, leaving me 3 levels underground with a bundle of freezing people and nothing to eat or drink.

How cold is really cold?  The items might have suffered cold damage and died, the wagon too.

It was about -200 in world gen parameters, enough to cover the map in glaciers, dwarves started to die in about 30 seconds.

-200 :o  I suspect a dwarf on fire would freeze to death under those conditions.

Unless Toady has his OWN units of temperature, I think that the temperature is in Celcius. O.o

He does, actually.  I don't think they go negative, although they do extend far below absolute zero

Yeah, that'll likely do it.  The cold damage is a little weird right now in that it actually destroys things, many of which shouldn't be destroyed.

If you look in the world gen parameters, you'll see you can make them go negative. :P

And below absolute zero?  fweee that's cold.

How exactly can atoms move less than being completely still?  :D

Same thing happened to me, but it was when I put the temperture range to 500-1000. Everything burned/melted.

Judging from the fact that none of the numbers (even the burning/melting ones from directly above me) are in the ten-thousands, I have reason to believe that the raw temperature scale (which does, in fact, have normal dwarf temperature clocked at over 10,000, see [HOMEOFTHERM:]) is not the same as the worldgen temperature scale.
Unless Toady has his OWN units of temperature, I think that the temperature is in Celcius. O.o
He does, in the raws.  Not sure what's used in worldgen though.

Worldgen is Farenheight I think.  Default worldgen is 25-75, which in few if any deserts and tundras.

Err...
No, I don't believe that it's in Fahrenheit, I'm preeeetty sure that tundras wouldn't exactly work out at 25 degrees.  It's too hot.  Same goes for deserts at 75: too cold.

Mind, I haven't seen EITHER in all of the worlds I generated, but 25 F is below freezing by 7 degrees.

There are polar/elevation changes, so it's not actually 25 that the glaciers/tundras occur at -- they need a peak temperature of -5.  The world gen temp scale is (local temp-10000)*4/3.  The local temps are fahrenheit+9968, I think.
