[39e] Faster DF in 39e?
« on: July 24, 2008, 11:06:27 pm »

Has anyone else noticed that the game progresses much faster in 39e than previously? I just started a fortress and I have caravans, theives, and migrants knocking on my door sooner than I had ever thought possible?

Is this a bug or did I alter some variable somewhere that does this?

How many games has this occurred to you? I have had migrants come knocking on my door within a season of embarking in prior versions.

Me and my roommate just started games, and we both are running into the same thing, it isn't just migrants, caravans and thieves are popping up far quicker than I remember them coming.

I'll play it right now and see! I feel as though the thieves and caravans are connected. But as of right now, unless it's game breaking, I'm guessing it's a feature and not a bug.

Did you embark rather close to your home civ/ a kobold civ/whichever civ is sending the caravans?

I'm sure that being close to your home civ affects how early migrants show up, but I'm not sure about the others.

I tried out a year and I had a caravan on the 14th Limestone, 501 Early Autumn. Migrants followed soon after. No thieves yet.

How fast is fast for you? When I think it, I'm thinking within the first year before summer.

Caravans are related entirely to your trade depot's position and not by the length of time played, wealth, population, or anything else. If its accessible by wagons, then human and dwarven traders will bring wagons. Otherwise its just the pack animals.

You altered a variable.  The longer you play the greater the [SKILL] variable increases.  This makes you play better, and if you start a new fortress, your increased [SKILL] will cause you to grow much faster than the previous time you played.  Unfortunately, the only known methods of decreasing [SKILL] are taking a very long break from playing (3 months +) or massive head trauma.  Both of which are undesirable to your average person.

I was about to go crazy and call bullshit on this, but I see what you mean now.

That is the ultimate, DFiest way of expressing the statement you just made.

Alternately :P, did you use the site finder? Perhaps they show up faster if there are goodies at the site or something.
