Forums more than playing DF
« on: July 24, 2008, 11:13:51 am »

Recently I've been on the forums more than I've been playing DF. Partly I'm waiting for the bugs to be ironed out of the new version before I download it. But it started before that.

I'd search around, making worlds in 38c, looking for a prime embark site. Then I'd do all the embark shuffling, doing the same optimal skill group and equipment loadout (everyone a miner plus one other skill, if you're interested). Then we'd embark and I'd set up the wood burner and forge so they could make their seven picks and two axes. I'd designate the entire area of the fort that seven dwarves would need. Let them go.

But sometimes I'd finish designating and then think, I'll go do something else. And just not come back to it.

I've seen this before when I play a game, that I see a lot of it or I get to the end, and I just get burned out on it because there isn't anything new to see or do.

But DF has the deepest gameplay I've seen. I despair at my ability to play a mindless FPS like Enemy Territory for months, I played Battlefield for years, yet most RPGs leave me bored three quarters of the way through. But I like RPGs, right? I cut my gaming teeth on RPGs!

I know I'm not much on racing games. Might as well race in GTA, as far as I'm concerned. Puzzle games are alright to pick up once in a while, but I prefer my puzzles embedded in another (better) game.

I'm kinda iffy on MMORPGs because of the grind. I want to have fun playing, and grinding to me is fun for a short time and then I'm annoyed.

Flight sims, meh. A flight sim as deep as EVE or Hardwar? Yes please! But I did enjoy Freelancer, and it was pretty simple. Pirates! counts as simple but entertaining.

Survival horror games are kinda cool. I liked Dino Crisis 1, watched a lot of RE4, and I played a little bit of Silent Hill 1 before the poor controls and camera repulsed me.

RTS can be good, but after playing the first two Warcraft, Myth: Fallen Lords, C&C, Stronghold, and who knows how many others I'm burned out on them. When somebody brings something new to the table, we'll talk.

So what's going on? Am I just getting in a DF rut? I'm not being distracted by some other game. Spending a lot of time out and about. But when I do sit down at the computer I find that I check my email and read a bit, maybe play a flash game here and there, and that's it.

I totally know where you're coming from.  Maybe I'm just getting too old for games (28).  It's like I have a little voice in the back of my head that says, "I want to play a game", then I think about it and decide that there is nothing fun to play.

I'm dissapointed by a lot of the upcoming games.  Maybe it's because I am used to the depth of Dwarf Fortress, but it seems like the new mainstream games coming out just look incredibly boring to me.

I had been watching Spore for like 3 years, waiting to play it.  Now, I've decided I'm not even going to buy it in September.  It's just a total dissapointment to me.  I have been playing creatures 2 lately with the improved Canny genome - now THAT'S what Spore should have been like.

Another dissapointment is the news that Dragon Age will not have multiplayer.  Don't try to act like you're the spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate and then not include a multiplayer option.  And definately don't try to act like you are Dungeons & Dragon's digital incarnate when you can't play the game with your friends.

Another dissapointment - Diablo 3.  Meh.  Another hack n slash clone.  Yeah, I know you have better graphics and a few more skill options.  But do you have player-built cities, realistic family systems, global warfare?  No, of course not.

So, this is the curse of Dwarf Fortress.  Once you've played it, you can never truly enjoy anything else.

...Then again, maybe I'm just getting too old for games.

Yeah, I get the "nothing fun to play" feeling too. I'll sit at my desk and stare at my monitor, and flip through my CD book passing by all those games I played into the ground one by one. I could probably load up Diablo 1 and have fun with it. But getting past the "blarg I played that already" is kind of tough. Maybe I'll go through some of the games I haven't heard of in this subforum and see what pops up.

But I WANT to play DF! It's just so good, especially compared to other shallower games.

I haven't gotten this in awhile- I stay busy with outside activities a lot, so DF always sounds like fun.

BUT!

The last time I had it was when I had a fortress for 10 years, and nothing ever happened to it that couldn't simply be taken care of very easily.  When I finally stopped playing that, the new versions came out and I've been playing them since(a new world and goal each version).  The thing that helps the most, I believe, is that I don't get that much of a chance to play. :P

If it weren't for piracy, I would've killed myself out of boredom by now. I must've played every retail game released since 1990.

When I'm really bored I make squares on the desktop with the group select.  It took me forever to get a decent fortress started, and I can't play it because my sister's been on the computer ALL DAY playing The Sims, and she can't play it on this computer(Which doesn't have dwarf fortress) because she was stupid enough to lend her friend the disk.

I get the "I don't want to play anything, but I want to play!" syndrome quite a lot. I usually end up playing some of the shallower games - Trials 2 SE, TowerBloxx (evil game, that one), Crazy Machines 2...

CM 2 is not shallow, but it is dull once you beat the insanely easy missions.

When I'm really bored I make squares on the desktop with the group select.

That is strangely soothing. I felt a little twinge of "ooh new gameplay" when I drew it from the bottom left corner first ^_^

Also, back when I played MMOs, you could tell when I was bored that day because I'd spin around in circles and try to run around finding terrain faults.

BTW, playing SCZ atm, looks like fun through the weekend at least.

I have been having the same issues recently. For the last few months I have been trying to find something to supplement DF, so that I don't burn out on it. While some have proven a distraction for a few days, once I get a hang of the gameplay and have seen what the game can do, I suffer a 'faliure of fun'.

While the basic idea behind a game might be intriguing there is always some failure in the execution. Sometimes this can be quite petty. (I was put off XCom 3 because time acceleration didn't seem to sync with the pacing of the game events.) Or perhaps I would rather the game to be in a different genre (I probably would have enjoyed Age of Wonders 2 if it had been Grand-Strategy or Civ-like.)

Perhaps I am a snob, or perhaps I just have taste. I think it comes down to people like Toady (and this dude http://www.quelsolaar.com/ (read his blog to see what I mean)) raising my expectations.

I get the same feeling. DF, well, its awesome and all, but I either don't have enough time for a full-blown fort or get bored halfway through, or stop and lose the motivation to return to it. I'm mostly waiting for some more features, which will all be awesome.

I'm also waiting for Battlefield Heroes to come out.

Edit: Also I find "The World Ends With You" to be a very entertaining game, I've played it for about 70 hours now. For the DS.

Do not say such things!  The global corporate game industry conspiracy will have Toady assassinated!

Also, why on earth would you want Diablo 3 to have all that stuff?  It's Diablo 3, not some game that's nothing like Diablo.  Also also, it can't be a Diablo clone if it's the sequel.

Yeah, games nowadays are all dull and boring after a short period. Ive tried various MMORPGs also, but always ended up quitting from those. Those are all repetitive and boring if youve played enough. I wont buy more MMORPGs anymore, except if I spot something really original with lot of features and deep gameplay, however I dount that there will be any mmorpg like that in the near future.
Ive really missed the old days and the old RPGs. Any of you have played with Knights of Legend for example? Very old RPG, but the combat system in it was just awesome, still the best imho. Also the old Wizardry game...hell yeah those were the games!

..as for Dwarf Fortres..DF is already much more enjoyable than any other "new" games. However DF is more like a sandbox game now, and I am waiting for the full Army Arc/Caravan Arc to be implemented. The game will change a lot if those will be added, we will have real military action/diplomacy etc. and not just sandbox fortress building. Also hopefully the presentation arc will kick in sooner or later, so that I can start to work on my DF mod what will contain graphical tiles for everything.

I've been spending quite a bit of time at the http://www.eegra.com/ forums, 'cause Patrick and Dan are two of the best people ever. Kinda been ignoring DWAAARF FORTRESS a bit because of it.
