This fort is a mess. And I'm not just talking about the layout. There's engravers doing woodcutting, farmers doing mining.. It'll take a whole day just to get every Dwarf's work orders fixed.

Now that the raiders are dealt with the real work can begin. The first thing to take care of is that ungodly half-constructed wall next to the road leading to the gates.

I don’t know what the builder had in mind for that, but it must come down to make room for proper fortifications.

The next thing to do is organize the stockspiles; specifically taking stock of all weapons and armour available, and melting down unsuitable or ill-fitting items. The current stocks indicate a severe lack of ammunition for our Marskdwarves with barely over 100 bolts in the armory. As such, I’ve ordered full time production of bolts. The new defenses will rely heavily on our markdwarves.

And speaking of stockpiles, the ones we have are a complete mess! I am simply stunned at the sheer bureaucratic mess the stockpiles are. There are no less than 6 armour stockpiles all situated in the same room, yet are not counted as a single one, causing 6 times the amount of forms to be filled and signed for; one for every possible stockpile. I think just organizing the stockpiles alone will take a full year to do. I have no idea how I’ll be able to get this fort in working order and build siege fortifications on top of that.

A cave crocodile from the river managed to swim up the channel a previous ruler had dug for a garden of sorts and cause quite a stir. Several Dwarves were nearby and Melbil Rigithvetram, a siege engineer, was attacked. The crocodile tore a chunk out of her lower left arm before retreating back into the water.

There is a series of traps lining the walkway next to the channel, but it seems they have been neglected. Over half of the traps are sitting unloaded. I believe the problem stems from a severe lack of mechanics to tend to the traps; if the census is correct, there are only 3 registered mechanics in this entire Fortress. That simply will not do.

3rd of Sandstone, 108

To make way for the new fortifications, and to allow faster access to the outside world, I’ve ordered the dismantling of the walls that flank the main gates. It simply created a bottleneck and increased travel times. The children seemed to enjoy taking it down, and it gave a lot of work for the peasants.

Additionally, I’ve ordered the jail to be expanded. The Hammerer mentioned the lack of a good jail. Who am I to deny the Hammerer that? Some one who wants the use of all of his limbs, that’s who.

10th of Sandstone, 108

The Countess mandated that 3 nickel items were to be made. She didn’t specify what items she wanted though.

To clear the way for the eventual siege-works, I’ve ordered the entire western forest to be cut down. I’m sure I’ll have an ear-full from the Elves when spring rolls around, but the trees will block the path of the ballista. There’s also a large clear-glass structure that presents a problem. Undoubtedly it is the monument of some previous ruler, and as such deserves to stand, but it will undoubtedly interfere with my plans.

14th of Sandstone, 108

The Count Consorts constant tantrums have finally gotten on my nerves. As such, he’s going to get everything he ever wanted; a grand bedroom, dining hall, office, and tomb. All engraved and appointed with the finest furniture available. It will be some time before its all ready, however, and I only hope he doesn’t end up killing some poor Dwarf before then.

The last of the stray cats have been butchered today as well. The fort is starting to smell less like a litterbox every day. Now if I could only talk to mayor into giving up a couple of his 12 cats.

The deforestation project is also coming along nicely. A full 1 third of all the trees designated for cutting have been felled, and the woodworkers continue to work tirelessly on the rest. After this, we’ll never run out of wood.

The ammunition situation is also looking up. From barely over 100 bolts 2 weeks ago, we now boast over 440 bolts.

25th of Sandstone, 108

Construction on the gate fortifications is well underway. The perimeter walls are under construction and the air-lock gate is almost ready to be put in place. However, construction is not going nearly as quickly as I would like. The stonemasons are complaining of rocks being in the way of construction. When I told them to just move them out of the way, they said they couldn’t move objects already assigned to another job. I don’t think the world is going to end if they move the bloody rock 5 feet off to the side…

I don't really know your tileset.  What is that block of gold?  Is it gold?  Do we even have gold?

Also:  haha the fort is a mess.  It was doomed to be a mess.  It's a succession fort and people keep making things.

That block of gold is actually a brass trade depot. Unless you're referring to that block of yellow with the black-on-gray I in the middle, then that's just sand.

You know, I picked up my turn in the middle of Autumn. Does that mean I should hand it off to the next player once spring comes or continue to the next spring after that? Doing the former would just be 'completing' Marine Kings turn.

The essence of the succession game is that every ruler who's taken over has their own grand dreams and great projects to build, and it's impossible to get them all in one year.  At the same time, every player develops their own DF Logic of Economics, which no one else understands.  So now the fort is a checkered mess of ad-hoc stockpiles and half-finished monuments.  The Eternal Halls are goddamn beautiful.

Hey Dogman, can you post a list of the nobles?  Or are you almost ready to post a save?

You can do either.  If you aren't interested in completing a year and a half you can drop it on the spring.  Otherwise you can feel free to do your original year.

5th of Timber, 108

To help with the construction of the fortifications I’ve drafted the miners. The northern forests have been slated to be cut down as well. Work continues on schedule.

I’ve left the general management of the fortress to the appointed nobles, as trying to interfere with daily operations would be simply too much work. However, it has come to my attention that a metalcrafter by the name of Oddom Orrunlogem has become possessed by a wayward spirit and has claimed a craftsdwarves shop.

17th of Timber, 108

Oddom came out of his possession today. He has no memory of creating Fakzakgol, a felsite crown. It seems to be worth quite a good fortune, and it looks the part as well.

The new archery range has been dug out of the hillside as well. It consists of 3 groups of 8 targets each, allowing for a total of 24 Marksdwarves to practice simultaneously, a huge improvement from the makeshift targets the previous rulers had built in the middle of some abandoned hallway. Additionally, a catapult range has also been designated to be dug out, to train our future siege operators.

12th of Moonstone, 108

The first of the Ballista were installed today, and the siege workshops continue to produce parts for additional ballista.

Dodik Amnekdod had a child today while working on the fortifications; a baby boy she has decided to name Urist “Swiftcraft” Subetrigith. After I congratulating the new mother I issued a standing order to not give birth in the middle of construction as it hampers work and puts jobs behind schedule.

2nd of Opal, 108

The Count Consorts living quarters have finally been completed after having been delayed in favour of constructing the fortifications.

Speaking of which, they are coming along perfectly on schedule. The northern ballista bank is almost complete, and the new barracks and sparring centers only need to be furnished. The storerooms are not yet complete, but work is being done on them as I write this.

13th of Opal, 108

The Countess gave birth to a baby boy today; his name is Zaneg “Helmcrewed” Zonginet. The Eternal Halls celebrate the Countess’ first child.

Construction of the fortifications continues. In addition to the fortifications I’ve decided to build a pair of obelisks alongside the road leading north. They will mark the point upon which travelers and merchants enter the realm of The Eternal Halls.

27th of Opal, 108

The northern Ballista bank has been completed and the newly drafted siege operators are busy practicing on the catapult range. The barracks and sparring center are also complete, and as such I’ve ordered the old facilities to be decommissioned.

9th of Obsidian, 108

With the New Year nearly upon us and the construction of the first stage of fortifications nearly complete, I thought it would be appropriate to issue a new general work order. Starting tomorrow a massive mining operation will begin. The miners of The Eternal Halls will dig deep into the depths of this mountain in search of any and all precious gems and metal ores. This new project should make legendary miners out of all of them, and then we will be truly worthy of being the new Mountainhomes.

1st of Granite, 109

With spring comes the completion of the first line of defense of The Eternal Halls. The entire length of the ground fortification is lined with Ballista, and bolt production is at 100%. There is still some work left to be done on the 2nd level of fortifications, specifically finishing the parapets for the Marksdwarves. Unfortunately I won’t be around to oversee the total completion of the fortifications. I’ve been recalled back to the old Mountianhomes. The order wasn’t very specific, but I simply can not stay at the Eternal Halls any longer. I pray the next ruler has the wisdom to leave my work orders as they are; everything necessary to complete the defenses has already been ordered.

Well, it's spring time now. I'll pass on doing the next full year as the map runs on an average of 15 FPS, and I've felt really uninspired in regards to writing lately.

The next ruler will notice I've left a ton of construction orders left. I only ask that they be left to be finished; no extra work is necessary. Well, except for the obelisks, but that's only removing a pair of stairs and replacing them with iron block ramps, if it wouldn't be too much trouble.

Here's the save: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=564

Oh, and here's the list of Nobles

Haha I'm still alive!  Ok, cool.  Good turn, Dogman.  Kishmond is up next; I'll PM him.  Here's hoping there's no bug!

So good to be back. Incidentally, I've not had power for 1 week, 5 days, 15 hours, and 35 minutes. Just came back on. As soon as I regain my sanity I'll start my turn. And am I right this is still on .40d?

I haven't read the whole thread (yet), but can I be number 33? I don't have that much experience yet, but I'll try my best. ;D

On the map topic, we have one in DFMA from a while back, but I dunno how to upload a more current one.  The save is a couple pages up; you could take that and look at the fort.

Kishmond, how's things?  Started yet?

   27th of Obsidian, 108

The tension was palpable, but so was the boredom. The Countess had graciously lended the use of her office to hold a small meeting among the nobles. First (and last) up on the list was the issue of the next Chief Organizer. So far, they had gotten nowhere. Olin Nillibad, Hammerer, stood up suddenly.
"Let me just get an idea out there. Goes by the name of Kishmond, hammered by yours truly a couple months back, but I've noticed a few things-"
The Countess interrupted. "On what charges? Are you suggesting we grant a criminal the title of Chief Organizer?"
"Two counts of production order violation. Yours, in fact, Countess. But that's not the point. There is something different about him. You may have noticed a dwarf roaming the halls with not a speck of dirt on his person?"
"Him?" The Tax Collector raised her eyebrows, "Always staring at the walls as he passes by?"
Olin nodded, "As he passed by my desk he noticed my papers were out of order and insisted he fix it. I thought, why not? and 30 minutes later they were 'Primarily alphabetized by given name, secondarily by last name', that was what he said. I tried to make his hammering light given that he just did me a day's work."
Glances were exchanged, and after a further hour of back and forth arguing it was settled that this clean dwarf would be the next Chief Organizer. It was going to be an interesting year.

And my dwarfs profile, he is an armorsmith/furnace operator and part time stargazer:
