I really shouldn't have said anything about wanting more problems to solve.  If this fortress wasn't cursed to begin with, I sure brought a smackdown on it.

And that's it, I'm finally done.  Battle turned out alright, all things considered.  Aq spent the whole thing in the wine cellar, my peasant mob won the day, Dadam showed up to kill-steal all three Elven squad leaders, ten dwarves died, and no tantrum spirals.  I didn't write up a narrative post for this one (too big, no time, etc.)  but suffice to say it was pretty wacky.  Calvin and a woodcutter took on eight goblins, and Calvin chased the survivors across half the map.  A lazy brawl dragged on up the hill over the doors, claiming five dwarves before the marksdwarf squad started peppering them at the end.  And the highlight was the giant dogpile of peasants on the three highly skilled, iron equiped elves on the trade depot.  So, here's the last post-


Eternal Halls Record - 19th Moonstone 104

The Nightmare of Beards the goblins call themselves, and terror did they promise us so long ago.  And so did we vow, that death would be all they receive from us.

The first battle of the Eternal Halls has ended, and we are victorious.  Vicious cowards that goblins are, they hit first with a band of archers to soften us up.  Nearly turned me a pincushion, but we slew the lot without too much trouble.  They were led by the most disgusting character I've ever had to lay eyes on – an Elven maiden with a barbed whip.  I always knew those twig brained cannibals were in league with the goblins.  She ripped a forger to shreds before we did likewise to her.

A job well done, the soldiers and I all went inside to rest.  What fools we are.  What a fool I am.  Three more squads, each led by another grinning tree-devil, dropped out of the hills over the gate and laid into the peasants.  A long bloody day's brawl later, and Calvin was chasing the last of them into the woods, while the rest of us picked up the pieces.  Lost Reg the great weaver and her child, survived by her husband and eldest daughter.  One of my guards, Minkot, went down to the elves.  Bunch of workers I didn't know are scattered over the depot, and quite a few more are wounded.  All in all, a triumph of dwarven fighting spirit over armed and experienced thugs, but a bad loss all around.  Ten have added to the tombs.  The Eternal Halls stand, now with sixty nine dwarves provided everyone else lives.

Curious force the goblins sent.  Four squads, plus some rogues to scout us out.  Each squad was led by an elf, an no squad had more than two weapons between the half-dozen fighters.  Apparently they're led by the vicious sap-bloods, have plenty of bodies to spare, but little equipment.  Have to factor that into future battle plans.  Rule one – no one goes outside with reason and escort.

Done-
-Win battle.
-Curse name of all greenskins and their pasty allies.

Doing-
-Guard doors.
-Clean up depot.
-Get rid of goblin junk.


Record of the Eternal Halls, 26th of Obsidian of the year 104

It's clear I can't remain as administrator any longer.  Overseeing the Fortress Guard and training the soldiers is taking up all of my time now.  The gates need much more fortification, and I'm not the designer for the job.  Too many chores are drawing my attention away from drill and practice.  I took this job because it needed taking, and it's time I stepped aside and focused on my duties.

Calvin took a hand at running things last year.  Antlia died in the process, but I think all the work since then, especially her good showing at holding the gate, tells me she's ready to try again.  We founded this capital, and she's as deserving as I to run it now.

This place needs her skill as a miner and architect.  Need to do something about defending the entrance.  We haven't dug any exploratory shafts for more metals.  I'm sure more immigrants will arrive soon.

Done-
-Steeled nerves, straitened spines, beat in sense.
-Fought battles, killed goblins.
-Earned honor for the Eternal Halls.

Doing-
-Maintain nerves, spines, sense.
-Defend dwarves, fight wars.
-Keep honor of the mountainhomes.
-Hand over keys.

Hey, conflict is what makes a story, and no succession fort is complete without it.  Seems like you avoided (hopefully) a tantrum-spiral wipeout.  Besides, anything short of perma-world-flooding can be reclaimed fairly easy, so no real concerns.

Awesome that I'm such a badass.  The founders get that way really quick in most forts.

This looks fun actually, and I see lots of areas of improvement. Count me on the operator list and we'll see if improvement still needs doing when I get around to it.
Only one question: What is the point of the extensive waterway? I heard talk of a tree farm, but you don't need that much custom construction for that surely.

It seems the tree farm is about maybe two hundred tiles?  Kinda small for one.  A proper tree farm is the better part of the level.

Anyway, I'll add you to the list.  We may never loop at this rate.

Boy, by the looks of that map, you guys must not like Z-levels very much!

I build almost entirely in Z-levels most of the time (Kinda like one long perpetual shaft with rooms branching off of it slightly), so this should be interesting when my turn rolls around.

On the subject of z-levels, most of the fort was already in place by the time I got it.  I would have built the bedrooms at least in vertical style, but I worked with what I had.  Being all obsessive compulsive, I hate to break a pattern.

As for the waterway, it was mostly because I was bored and wanted something more than a barracks and smoothed hallways to leave my mark on the place.  Goblins wound up doing that for me, but there's the sewer at any rate.  The tree farm should definitely be a lot bigger, but I've never made one before, and got it stuck in my head that I was making a farmable area.  Bit of fun if you back the game up - since the cave river is on the same level as the top of the fortress, if you pull the (artifact) lever in Dadam's office, it'll flood the whole fort.  Very slowly.  DF water moves a bit like melted jello, and dries a lot quicker than you'd think.

Oh, and I forgot to mention, we've got about 1100 plump helmets in stock, and nothing else.  The farm fields (both of them, need more) are set to fallow.  Cave King, see if you can broaden the menu any.  Course, the hundreds of meaty meals cover things plenty well.

Only problem with building deep is that it lowers framerate to keep track of moving crap on that many levels.

Edit:  Also, haha!  'Dadam' has 4 kills.  One kobold and three elves.  Screw the treehuggers!

I think it would be best if i abdicate from the list. My current fortress of 80 dwarves is hovering around 20fps and that is with careful managing of the number of objects and not many pets. Maybe leave my name on the list but just put a note by it that i should be skipped except for reclaim years or just after a catastrophy. Im gonna try and set up a high fps succession game I have a good idea for it.

OK I'm up well rested its 7:20 AM I'm grounded and I don't have a job. Perfect day to play DF.

Ok So I've started setting up a tower cap farm lets just hope nothing goes eerrr wrong...

I don't really have much of a clue as to what else is going on around here everything is so damn cluttered im starting to get claustrophobic.

Well, feel free to hack around with the fort a bit.  That's part of having a succession game is that each ruler brings a bit of their own style to the thing.

That said, I agree that the fort is a tremendous mess right now.  Everything is all confused and I fully expect the thing to flood sometime.

So, pretty much awesome.

Yeah, What I think would be really nice is if someone went down enough z levels to find one undisturbed, and created a nice preplanned deal with wide hallways and stockpiles that are big enough and in places that make sense for what people or workshops use it. 

Then we could basically abandon the upper level and retreat deeper into the mountain in classic dwarvish style.

That's just my idea though!  :P

I'd love to do it, but my turn won't come again in ages!  :D
