Hey folks, Aq here. Finished summer, on to autumn. Does anyone know how elections work? Our new mayor (same name as the old mayor...) has no relationships greater than passing aquaintence. Oh well, his mandates have been easy to meet. I agree that one thing that'll make this fort interesting is to keep the nobles alive and do our best to appease them. The mayor's office gets nothing though - at least until someone worth the title gets elected. And no, I did not embelish the events of the update.
I'd like to add that Dadam is the mightiest dwarf in the fortress right now. He's near Legendary in Bookkeeping and Engraving, and punched a kobold hard enough to make it explode. I put the artifact mechanism in his office - his profile reads, "He conducted a meeting in a setting worthy of legends recently." After, "He has taken joy in slaughter recently."
I don't have to work tonight so I should be done fairly soon. I expect the next migrant arrival will really shake things up (more people, economy on, new nobles), so it'll take a while longer. Big new developments - we're not alone...
The great mysteries of dwarven politics hung in the air with the unmistakable smell of the human trader. Aqizzar couldn't ignore that he was sitting in the same chair. Across another of his many tables sat Dadam, being his own immaculate office. The human had been singularly unimpressed, not able to appreciate Sigun's renown floodgate lever in the way the dwarves could.
Dadam shuffled through the election returns, which Aqizzar never could remember to vote in. This one would teach him to pay more attention, if any could.
“So that ponce Zulgar's out of our beards now?” Aqizzar asked over his wine barrel.
“Yes, Zulgar Stullikot is now just an ordinary craftsdwarf...”
“Good riddance. Never could figure out how he got elected. And our new leader is-”
Dadam smirked at the swelling Captain. “Also Zulgar. Thikutcuggan this time.”
Aqizzar just stared. “Who?”
“Beats me,” Dadam shrugged out, absently flipping through the ballots. “There's only three legible votes here, and his name is on all of them.”
Aqizzar just grunted. With nothing else to add, Dadam pulled out the trade agreements. He was about to bring up the guild leader's fascination with earrings, when a great cry went up from the front gate. At Dadam's urging, the Captain of the Guard sauntered into action, but stopped when a new stench hit his nose. Both looked to each other at once, “Goblins.”
Aqizzar took off in a full run to the trade depot, where the human caravan had yet to break camp. The merchants and their animals ran wild at the arrows arcing into the fray, as their guards stumbled about grabbing their weapons. All together rushed at the goblins, who quickly lost their nerve before the tall pikemen. One raider stumbled out of the fight, only to be sent flying by the dwarf's axe. The cackling bowmen continued to pepper them all with arrows, striking the humans in the legs as they fell into each other. Aqizzar lept over them to the goblins, separating one bowman from his arm, then his entrails, as the human with a hammer bashed the other goblin to paste.

We have goblins. Damn fools to attack the depot like that. Thieves or otherwise, if it's war they want, it's war they'll get. These are the Eternal Halls, capital of all dwarves, and they'll find us no easy mark.
On that note, these recruits need some fighting spirit. I've started training with them to beat in some nerve. Equipment is coming along.
Human Guild Leader came to trade. Took more junk for wood, meat, and metal. Wants earrings and toys. Freaks.
Elected a new mayor. Never met him, some forge monkey. Note to self – vote next time.

More goblin thieves turned up in the corridors. Only managed to grab a kitten before we chased them off. I've had the stairs by the gates sealed up – no goblin will be taffing about my fortress without coming deep inside. We killed all the raiders, so no word got out, but the thieves escaped easy. If the gob's leaders didn't know who we were before, they sure do now.
The water system worked, after a fashion. Filled a little quicker than I thought, started spilling into the forum before it closed off. Little muddy, no problems. Tower-cap farm didn't fare so well. Tried to get the water to equalize, and now the lever access is flooded. It sealed off before it completely sunk, but the area's useless for now. We'll have to find a way to pump the water out.
New mayor's not making too big a nuisance of himself anymore. Wanted some turtle shell trinkets. Also suggested we make more shields – I like the way he thinks.
Done-
-Equipped the soldiers.
-Watered the wells.
-Dug more bedrooms.
Doing-
-Get water out of the lower levels.
-Chain some dogs at the doors.
