Almost straight from DxDiag.

Operating System: Win XP Pro

Processor: Intel Pentium D CPU 2.80GHz (2 CPUs) [Wait, does that mean I have a dual processor?]

RAM: 1.49 GB RAM

Video Card: Intel Q965/Q963 Express Chipset Family 256 MB memory

That, and I've done that whole FPS tweak thing mentioned earlier, so I figure I can handle a decent amount and still get at least 30 FPS, but I haven't tested it with a very high population yet.

With that machine?  You shouldn't have problems at all at less than maybe 150 dwarves, and it should run tolerably even at the (default) full 200.

That is, assuming you don't have lots of one-tile-wide corridors and others weird things that slow everything down.  Also assuming you don't play with water for the sake of playing with water.

Yarg this takes a long time.  With my big water project nearly finished and nothing else to do, it's just a lot of micromanagement left to clean up.  It's damn confusing trying to make sure everyone's got a bedroom, but other than that there's nothing else for me to take care off.  Unless something comes up (like goblin's I hope) I'll try to just coast out the rest of my turn and speed this along.  Til then, another two month update.  Hopefully I'll get through summer by the end of my night (5-ish).

[EDIT]Fixed sleep deprived typing.

Aqizzar dropped his wine barrel, made by his own hands, at the shouts from the lower halls.  More trouble brewing.  Down in the main forum, he found Dadam restraining one of the ruddy migrants.  “What's all this then, eh?”

Dadam tried to answer, but the newcomer spun and yelled out, “Who is in charge here?  Who is responsible for the death of my family?”

Aqizzar planted his axe and leaned into the loud migrant.  “You want me.  Well, what?”

The immigrant stood tall and announced himself.  “My name is Antlias Eseshlikot.  You killed my family?  Prepare to die!”

The carpenter held him off with his axepoint.  “Easy there lad.  Who's this family now?”

“Antlia Erithnoram and Omer Vabokudar.  I have heard that they were killed in these halls, and I have come to avenge them.”  The young dwarf summonded himself up, “If you are responsible, then you must die.”

“Omer was killed by a hill, and Antlia burned up diggin' the forges in grief.”  Seeing the confusion on Antlias' face, Aqizzar added, “You can blame ChJees if you want.  We all do.”

“Then this ChJees must pay for my loss.  Where is he?”

Aqizzar grunted.  “Stinking up his tomb.  Managed to kill himself in it.  You're just too late son.”

Antlias sunk in defeat.  After a moment, he flatly asked, “What can I do then?”

The carpenter pulled out a long carving saw and handed it to fiesty dwarf.  “Been needin' some soldiers.  You'll do fine.”  With a slap on the shoulder, the recruitment was complete.  “Welcome to the Eternal Halls, capital of all dwarves.”

Eternal Halls Record, 10th Hematite 104

It's clear this fortress needs some proper leadership.  Official nonsense being in the way, I've named myself Captain of the Guard to slap some work ethic into these dwarves.  Our supposed mayor Zulgar had to sign the papers – he wanted more chairs around.  He got his chairs alright.  When he came to, he declared the export of amulets to be illegal.  I'm sure Dadam will get a kick out of that when the wagons show up.

Putting together a proper military.  Can't be too careful.  Immigrant with some spine showed up – put him in charge.  Need to make some gear for them.

Waterway's coming along.  Not confident in the water pressure relief system, some floodgates will hold the water back.  Control lever's in Dadam's new office – he's quite pleased with it.  Thinking we'll try to get a tower-cap farm going while we're at it.  Sure, there's plenty of trees around, but not proper dwarven wood.

Done-
-Built barracks and office for me.
-Opened up the quarters for more space.
-Made traps around waterway entrance – Dungeon Master wants some olmmen.

Doing-
-Dig mushroom farm.
-Arm the recruits.
-Beat up Zulgar.

I never work with anything less than three-tile wide corridors (Except during the first year). Anything else just looks plain ugly, as far as I' concerned. As for rivers, I usually make perfectly due with lakes, unless the temperature ends up killing all of the water before I can get to it. It's nice to see I should be able to get a decent-sized fort - I was afraid I'd have to be stuck with a small population forever.

Wow, slower going than I thought.  Well, the fort doesn't end, so it's not like we are rushing towards anything I suppose.

That's definitely the attitude to have here.  With a dozen different schedules, time zones, and computer cpus there will be some quick turns and some really slow ones.  Also the various building and digging tasks that everyone wants to do slows down the year a bit.  I've always kinda wanted to be able to designate tasks, digging, and building things in real time.  It should be optional at least.  That way it doesn't pause for the five minutes that you are designating a digging patter or building pattern or whatnot.  Not really a big deal though.

It's damn confusing trying to make sure everyone's got a bedroom

Are the rooms I dug out already filled?

Good writing, indeed. Keep up the good work and just taske your time if needed. This fortress deserves carefull treating and nothing too fast can be carefull and gentle. Nice thing that Antlias came there at last, so he's in good condition and has some skill when I take the control of the Fortress.

Hey folks, Aq here.  Finished summer, on to autumn.  Does anyone know how elections work?  Our new mayor (same name as the old mayor...) has no relationships greater than passing aquaintence.  Oh well, his mandates have been easy to meet.  I agree that one thing that'll make this fort interesting is to keep the nobles alive and do our best to appease them.  The mayor's office gets nothing though - at least until someone worth the title gets elected.  And no, I did not embelish the events of the update.

I'd like to add that Dadam is the mightiest dwarf in the fortress right now.  He's near Legendary in Bookkeeping and Engraving, and punched a kobold hard enough to make it explode.  I put the artifact mechanism in his office - his profile reads, "He conducted a meeting in a setting worthy of legends recently."  After, "He has taken joy in slaughter recently."

I don't have to work tonight so I should be done fairly soon.  I expect the next migrant arrival will really shake things up (more people, economy on, new nobles), so it'll take a while longer.  Big new developments - we're not alone...

The great mysteries of dwarven politics hung in the air with the unmistakable smell of the human trader.  Aqizzar couldn't ignore that he was sitting in the same chair.  Across another of his many tables sat Dadam, being his own immaculate office.  The human had been singularly unimpressed, not able to appreciate Sigun's renown floodgate lever in the way the dwarves could.

Dadam shuffled through the election returns, which Aqizzar never could remember to vote in.  This one would teach him to pay more attention, if any could.

“So that ponce Zulgar's out of our beards now?” Aqizzar asked over his wine barrel.

“Yes, Zulgar Stullikot is now just an ordinary craftsdwarf...”

“Good riddance.  Never could figure out how he got elected.  And our new leader is-”

Dadam smirked at the swelling Captain.  “Also Zulgar.  Thikutcuggan this time.”

Aqizzar just stared.  “Who?”

“Beats me,” Dadam shrugged out, absently flipping through the ballots.  “There's only three legible votes here, and his name is on all of them.”

Aqizzar just grunted.  With nothing else to add, Dadam pulled out the trade agreements.  He was about to bring up the guild leader's fascination with earrings, when a great cry went up from the front gate.  At Dadam's urging, the Captain of the Guard sauntered into action, but stopped when a new stench hit his nose.  Both looked to each other at once, “Goblins.”

Aqizzar took off in a full run to the trade depot, where the human caravan had yet to break camp.  The merchants and their animals ran wild at the arrows arcing into the fray, as their guards stumbled about grabbing their weapons.  All together rushed at the goblins, who quickly lost their nerve before the tall pikemen.  One raider stumbled out of the fight, only to be sent flying by the dwarf's axe.  The cackling bowmen continued to pepper them all with arrows, striking the humans in the legs as they fell into each other.  Aqizzar lept over them to the goblins, separating one bowman from his arm, then his entrails, as the human with a hammer bashed the other goblin to paste.

Eternal Halls Record, 24th Hematite 104

We have goblins.  Damn fools to attack the depot like that.  Thieves or otherwise, if it's war they want, it's war they'll get.  These are the Eternal Halls, capital of all dwarves, and they'll find us no easy mark.

On that note, these recruits need some fighting spirit.  I've started training with them to beat in some nerve.  Equipment is coming along.

Human Guild Leader came to trade.  Took more junk for wood, meat, and metal.  Wants earrings and toys.  Freaks.

Elected a new mayor.  Never met him, some forge monkey.  Note to self – vote next time.

Done-
-Food stores straitened out.
-Fight goblins.

Doing-
-Whip up army.
-Finish tree farm, then finish waterway.
-Fight more goblins.
-Beat up new Zulgar.

Eternal Halls Record, 27th Galena 104

More goblin thieves turned up in the corridors.  Only managed to grab a kitten before we chased them off.  I've had the stairs by the gates sealed up – no goblin will be taffing about my fortress without coming deep inside.  We killed all the raiders, so no word got out, but the thieves escaped easy.  If the gob's leaders didn't know who we were before, they sure do now.

The water system worked, after a fashion.  Filled a little quicker than I thought, started spilling into the forum before it closed off.  Little muddy, no problems.  Tower-cap farm didn't fare so well.  Tried to get the water to equalize, and now the lever access is flooded.  It sealed off before it completely sunk, but the area's useless for now.  We'll have to find a way to pump the water out.

New mayor's not making too big a nuisance of himself anymore.  Wanted some turtle shell trinkets.  Also suggested we make more shields – I like the way he thinks.

Done-
-Equipped the soldiers.
-Watered the wells.
-Dug more bedrooms.

Doing-
-Get water out of the lower levels.
-Chain some dogs at the doors.

Awesome.  It's always so strange how adding up numbers and counting seeds makes you into Batman.

Re: Goblins.  Good!  I'm glad that they are hostile.  That gives us something to look forward to with regards to difficulties.  It also sounds like you are having some problems with regards to the tree farm.  If it's not already a complete loss, you could always just expand the area it contains sevenfold.  That is, if the place is sealed from the water source, dig out a huge area around it and then breach the wall.  The water will pour out and equalize to (hopefully) 1/7, and then dry up pretty quickly.

There are also more sane ways of doing that, I'm sure.

Okay, that pissed me right the hell off.  Didn't get much done, because a big fight broke out at the front gate that took way to much micromanaging and still didn't accomplish anything.

A goblin ambush scared the dwarven caravan out of the trade depot.  They sort of regrouped, but I guess because one merchant was badly hurt, the depot never registered them as being there, and after a minute they all left without a word.

Then I noticed the front doors flickering on and off, so I stationed a squad up there (when they finally got around to it) and killed a thief.  Then the haulers found another thief, and and the military just would not get out there.  Seriously, they're all set as On Duty (after Standing Down this whole time) and everybody is just chilling in their rooms.  The hauler/thief fight fell outside the doors, so line of sight was broken, and the thief proceeded to kill both the dwarves who fell on him.  Then every single dwarf I recruited right on the other side of the door would immediately run back down the hall, no matter how in toggled them or put the station marker.  So the thief got away scott free with two dwarven scalps while every one who should have been attacking him milled around three tiles away picking their noses.  Damn that sucked.  Also, everyone stopped hauling wood.  I'm beginning to think this fort is not only cursed, but bugged.

It also sounds like you are having some problems with regards to the tree farm.  If it's not already a complete loss, you could always just expand the area it contains sevenfold.  That is, if the place is sealed from the water source, dig out a huge area around it and then breach the wall.
Ironically, that's pretty much why it went pearshaped in this first place, yet seemed the easiest solution.  So it made the perfect DF plan!

Eternal Halls Record, 1st Sandstone 104

Good bit of insanity around here.  Traders from the mountain homes showed up, then were attacked by another throng of goblins.  Most of the pillocks forgot their weapons, but a couple had bows, and shot up the caravan pretty bad before the guards killed them.  All happened so fast, none of us made it outside to help.  Then we caught a band of thieves at the doors, and some kobolds stumbled in as well.  The merchants decided it was all too much, and buggered off without trading a thing.  Sniveling peddlers.  Just a few goblins.

Liaison made it inside before things went to hell.  Met with New Zulgar the 'Mayor' in his bedroom.  Zulgar wasn't happy at all about that.  Suppose it wouldn't hurt to make a proper mayor's office, in case we get a proper mayor.  Since we're not lacking for anything, he just asked the liaison for an assortment of metals and gems.  This being the capital, he said bringing in wealth would only be proper.  Maybe I'll get to work on that office.

Lower levels might be usable soon.  Had to dig out some new tunnels and chambers, but it's all for the best.  Dadam drew up some plans, and Calvin volunteered to knock them out, and with a bit of patience, everything will dry out soon enough.  Waiting for tower-caps to grow isn't a quick job.

Done-
-Kill lots of thieves.
-Trade.  Ask for trade.
-Drain tower-cap farm.

Doing-
-Guard doors.
-Make more furniture.

Eternal Halls, 2nd Sandstone

Spoke too soon.  A couple dwarves who went out to clean up the goblin mess ran into another thief.  Diced them apart before they, or anyone else, knew what hit them.  Coffins being made.  Need a graveyard.  And a better front door.

The game just won't let you finish your turn, eh?

Geez, and you were worried the fort would be too easy.  I don't think it's bugged; it sounds like either you told dwarves not to go outside, or the squad leaders were off getting drunk and the rest of the squad won't do their work.

Anyway, it's not the end of the world.  Seems like things are still going well enough.

I find it is usually best to use small squads 2-3, then you get less absenteeism from dumb leaders. Sometimes I even just make each man his own squad, it means you get the best turnout at each fight

That is true, but for most people, that is just micromanagement hell.  I don't mind, and will not hesitate to do it when in need, but...

Small squads are the happy medium though.
