[39d] Mining issue - dwarf stops mining up/down shaft
« on: July 23, 2008, 12:11:55 pm »

I just installed 39d.  I've encountered the following issue when trying to dig an Up/Down staircase across multiple levels.

After designating the staircase to be dug, my dwarf stops digging after the 1st tile.  He won't continue digging the staircase on the Z-level below.  I can see that the designation on the next level is clearly visible and ought to be accessible.

If I re-designate the next staircase then the dwarf will start digging again.  But he stops when he's finished with THAT staircase, and I have to re-designate the staircase below that.

I think it is because the dwarf wants a tile to stand on whilst he/she digs the new staircase.

What I did to counter the problem was dig an additional tile to the left then left it.

Yeah, I'm consistently getting this too. Never happened before this version.

I have this problem too. The solution is digging stairs up first, then stairs down.

This happens to me as well, but most of the time when a miner finishes his 'group' (the series of connected tiles which he mines out) he just stops until I redesignate. I think it may be a problem with job priority, since he goes all the way back to the meeting area until he starts mining again, or walks about 5-6 tiles away until he starts if I do not have a meeting zone. Needless to say, this makes mining take MUCH longer than it needs to, due to the walking back and forth for no reason.

I am having this same issue ... I'm trying to dig long shafts of up/down staircases while trying to discover my underground water source. My miner will dig the first set of stairs and then declare his current task to be "No Job" and will walk 90% of the way across a 4x5 map before he realizes there is more to dig. He will then go mine one more square and then repeat the process again.

Edit: Nope, this isn't just limited to staircases. I just designed a large rectangular area to be mined for a stockpile, and my miner dug out an area shaped:

Code: [Select]
  X
 XXX
XXXXX
 XXX
And has now stopped, happily standing in the meeting area proclaiming "No Job."

I can confirm this too.

Not exactly related, but I thought that overall in 39* mining has become a bit erratic. I often designate several deep vertical shafts to be dug from the surface when looking for minerals, and it seems in 39* the miners more often dig one staircase square, then decide to run to the next shaft to dig one level there, et cetera. I have a feeling that in the previous version they would more often continue on one shaft for some time at least before going back up to dig another one.

EDIT: Ok this thing does make fortress mode a bit tiring to play. I guess I can move my save into 39c though?

Might this bug be related to the following, listed as a change in 39d?

(*) added a few optimizations for rivers and designation job selection

Heh, having a dwarf simply not look for a new designation job would be one way to cut down on processor usage.  That could be considered an optimization, I suppose.  :)

When people designate thousands of tiles for digging, controlling how often and where people look for dig jobs is the single most important thing to consider.  I'm pretty sure I know why the timers are messed up for vertical shafts.  For now, removing and adding the designation should jump start them, though that's quite irritating, of course.

The sporadic mining stops happen for me even when I am mining out a relatively small room (3x3 to 10x10).

Just wanted to put my 2 cents. This bug happens to me even if it's the very first thing I designate. I'll do my usually pattern of four down staircases on the surface, then 4 up/downs on the z level below. The downcases are dug, but I have to re-designate the up/downs.

I'm also having this problem.  And I put a message in the wrong forum about it.

Sorry.  :(

This is still happening to me in 39e.

Odd, I just designated a 2x1 set of stairs all the way to the bottom of by fortress (both up/down and down stair up stair varieties) and they dug straight down, no need to redesignate, they went straight from one stair to another.
