Making Maisma
« on: July 23, 2008, 05:31:06 am »

I recently butchered two animals, the meat was taken to my food stockpile and I thought nothing of it.

Now huge amounts of maisma is coming from my butchers and I have no idea what to do, theres nothing in there I seem to be able to find thats causing it?

Every animal leaves behind chunks and a skin that will rot eventually. Pressing (t) and moving the cursor over the butchers will show you what is inside of it that may be causing the miasma.

yeah I did the silly mistake of thinking people would take refuse from the butchers to my garbage dump, ready to be atom smashed. they didnt :(

one refuse pile later and everything was sorted.

Since you're new, I'll just mention for you that it's usually best to have two refuse piles. One inside for bones and skulls, and one outside for chunks, corpses et al (basically, everything except bones and skulls (and possibly fresh hides)).
Bones occasionally come in handy for moods, and are also used for bone crafts and the like. If left inside they'll never disappear and will not generate miasma. The stuff that goes in the outside pile would generate miasma, but will not do so if it's outside, it'll just rot and eventually disappear.

There are three things I know about dwarves:
1. They've got beards. Even the women.
2. They're short. Especially the women.

Also, you don't have to put your refuse pile outside to escape miasma. Just make sure your room that holds refuse has diagonal access rather than cardinal access, and the miasma won't seep through.

Code: [Select]
XXXXXXXXXX
X=====X
X===== X <- Miasma can't seep diagonally

Or make a small room with a door, doors keep out maisma.

Yeah, but then your haulers would still be walking into a miasma cloud and getting bad thoughts when the stuff starts rotting and they've got to take another chunk of that kobold thief's leg to the pile.

"T" for watching whats in your workshops, its very handy imo. (especially for the Butcher workshop because it gets cluttered with miasma generating stuff really fast)

Another design for keeping any dwarves from experiencing miasma yet keeping all rotting items indoors is this:
Code: [Select]
XXXXXXXX
=X=X=X=X
X X X X

Set the stockpile tiles to restricted pathing and dwarves will only ever enter that square to drop something on it. This means they only enter that square when it is empty. While the item rots the dwarves will avoid that square.

Of course, I generally leave the refuse pile outside and only keep bone, shell and skull stockpiles inside.

For my latest fort I built an underground butchery/refusepile just one level from the surface, and put holes with rock grates over it. It doesn't prevent miasma, but it does seem to dissappate it faster.
