While The Mysterious Island is a fabulous book, 19th century knowledge is a bit advanced for DF, I think.  Primitive explosives are both period and canon, if Tolkien is an inspiration.  But I'd rather see demon rulers as the arbiters of explosive knowledge.

Oh, and goblins, being careless, could accidentally blow themselves to smithereens (I love that word) when they used it.

Exactly.  :-D  Plus, Goblins need a way to destroy walls and fortifications in some spectacular fashion, especially if their actual population is used for sieges in later versions--otherwise a well-defended fort could easily commit near-genocide simply by turtling with a dozen or so marksdwarves and/or many traps.  It would be amazing if goblins could undermine your constructions and blow them to pieces during a siege.  I'd settle for siege engines that batter down gates and knock down walls, however.  I'm sure Toady has a few ideas to keep balance.

Well, to be entirely fair, nitric acid was discovered in 800 AD at the latest.  And glycerin was around forever.

I suspect (without evidence) the reason the combination wasn't known earlier is because early alchemists blew themselves up.
IIRC, it was believed that florine was cursed, since it's so deadly that for quite some time anyone who tried to isolated it died in a lab accident

2 - Processing Fleece into Wool thread, historically this was one of the largest uses for Lye which is needed to wash away the natural oil from the fibers and is dates to the middle ages.  Of course this would require that sheep and sheep-shearing exist in the game (which is defiantly should).  It would be done at the farmers workshop.

A wool industry seems like a natural addition to what already exists in the game.
I agree that shearing should probably occur at the farmers workshop, and would result in a unit of fleece.
A "make wool cloth" job in clothiers shop would use a unit of lye and a unit of fleece to produce wool.

It seems like wool clothing should probably have slightly better properties than rope reed clothing.

Come to think of it, lye is also used in tanning. That's easy enough to mod in yourselves though.

I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

lol. For a second I thought you were suggesting that dwarfs bath in lye to clean themselves. That would be the fastest way to kill a fort.

Edit: This makes me think. Couldn't we logically weaponize lye? I know they used to pour hot oil and water on invaders from fort walls, could you imagine if we dumped a barrel of lye on a goblin? Lets see burning off their flesh, blinding them, poisoning them, as well as producing hydrogen gas from everything that is either, brass, tin, bronze, aluminium, and zinc. I see a dwarven war machine coming together.

Number one use for lye: Remove all of an elf's skin and throw them in a pit of the stuff.

Well, Quicklime has been used as a weapon, so I don't see why similar caustic or highly reactive substances couldn't be used. Tossing ground lye or an oversaturated lye sollution would probably work best, but that'd also be very dangerous to the thrower.

We could set it up like a stone fall trap, with lye barrels as, obviously what you load it with. You know, if this is mod able, I might do it.

Could we use it to burn military dwarfs' hands like in Fight Club? Or throw it at enemies? Maybe put it into a trap at a back entrance, which requires going underwater briefly before getting to the lye part....

It'd be cool in adv mode to be able to toss a handfull (Gloved of course) Into the face of your enemy to blind them.

That could be a combat overhaul. We're you throw sand, or lye or something, and it would be standard to have each dwarf have one. Also maybe even things like flasks of oil, to be lit on fire. You never know. Or even have, ground up glass to be thrown, or small knifes, I guess it would be nice to add in a melee weapon, and a thrown weapon, that dwarfs could use first as they charge into combat.
