Completly Surprising Deaths?
« on: July 22, 2008, 04:45:27 pm »

I decided to try to completly depopulate a pocket world in adventure mode the other day. I constructed some full adamant armour (including three chainmails) in fortress mode and then duplicated my save and abandoned.

It took me a while to find the stuff, the fortress was fairly large and there were many pieces. After this I mopped up any dwarves that were still hanging around the fortress with my masterpiece adamantine short sword, every hit lopping off a limb and the like.

My story continued as I wandered to the only human town and asked for a quest and I was given the task of killing a goblin drunk... hmm, not exactly what I was expecting but okay - gives me a chance to train up a bit whilst emptying the goblin keeps (there were three on the tile). I killed everything I came across until a Demon appeared and I thought I was done for. I mean... I was asked to kill a goblin drunk whilst there was a freaking demon in the world? Priorities...

The demon managed to hit me with its third fireball, yellowing a few of my body parts and I thought I was done for. I suppose it was lucky I had made a spare adamantine battle axe which I swiftly threw at him before knocking him unconscious. We both kept lapsing in and out of consciousness and I just managed to kill him (no thanks to the random goblin drunk that decided to wander in, punch me and then run away...)

Quest complete I headed back to recieve my fame and lack of reward (which made me kill everyone there). My next stop, to get a quest from the elves (who were the only civilisation to have two cities at world generation) No such luck there so I began my genocide a little before scheduled. Even elven archers couldn't touch me with my shield blocking almost every arrow that came my way. Then, when I thought it was all over and I was wandering down a hill to leave I got a message that ran roughly as follows:

"Elven Guard has struck you from behind"
"He hits you in the head"
"It is mangled"

I get the fatal wound message and a short while later am dead, this mysteriously lucky / strong guard standing victorious over me. In the whole attempt I had only been hurt twice, once by the demon's fireball and the other time by a lucky guard that managed to lightly bruise a limb.

Anyone else had surprising deaths like this? And I don't mean deaths due to flying crossbow bolts, god I have had so many of those...

I really must know what your stats were like. Strength, agility, toughness, armor user, shield user, and wrestling specifically.

I have a character now going at:

Ultra-Mighty, Perfectly agile, superhumanly tough, 26 armor, 30 shield, and 38 wrestling. I'm sure I'll be posting in this thread once he accidentally dodges an attack and falls off a cliff or something gay like that.

Well, the adventurer wasn't really that strong, I was relying almost entirely on the merits of adamantine.

Speaking of jumping off cliffs and dodging, you know the mayor's house / village hall / whatever it is that is always in a town and has that second story with the one tile wide walkway? Well I was trying to walk along that back to the ramp but there was a child in the way. Rather than trying to work out how to walk through the child I decided to attack it, screw the consequences! I hit the child for mediocre damage and he struck back but I dodged! And leapt off the walkway into what was basically a pile of children.

By the time I was done the whole hall was red and there were body parts everywhere.

Been there, done that. Had enormous fun doing it, too!  ;D

Actually my most surprising death was in one of those situations. After merrily slaughtering four cities (they were all in the same Civ, so after the first they attacked me on sight), I walk away to travel, a child finds me near a cliff, she attacks, I dodge and fall 6 levels to a very messy death. Le ouch.

From what I've heard in one thread, I'm surprised the children didn't break every bone in your body before they gouged out your eyes and strangled you to death. There are some nasty stories of legendary adventurers being mauled by children. Beginner's luck I guess. The random number generator must like them.

After my sarcastic comment about falling to my death off a cliff, and the subsequent stories of such deaths, I decided to go with "stand ground" in every possible spot in the combat prefs.

I got lucky with the majority of my attacks. I was using a hammer and so propelling children away from me. There were a fair number of counterattacks too which helped a lot. Hearing the message "Child was propelled away by the force of the blow, Child has slammed into an obstacle and exploded" really made my day.

What was weird was that there didn't seem to be a sensible number of adults in the town. Seriously, I think it was just the shopkeepers and one other, it was very weird.

I had a decent Hammerdwarf who I was "grinding" stats with, so I kept pacing back and forth over some land which included some haunted portions. I ran into the 10th or so skeletal cougar, and went to casually knock his face in, when all of a sudden he tears my throat out. Just like that. I stop, stare at "Mortal Wound", proceed to smash him to pieces...then died a step later.

Lame.

That always sucks when you die in that critical time between becoming all-powerful while grinding skills. In all honesty, grinding in a haunted portion probably wasn't the best idea, but of course the stupid cougar just got extremely lucky.

During the early days of one of my first successful characters, he was ambushed by a bear and lost his mace. I managed to escape despite my injuries, and snuck into a random town and stole a weapon. Much later I revisited the town. After slaughtering the majority of its inhabitants (they attacked me first) I left the site. Later I returned and after killing a few random guards some random archer hits me in the leg. I was annoyed because I had killed plenty of archers without getting hit. I crawled over towards him (foolish I know) and after deflecting a hail of arrows and being only a square away from me I get hit in the torso with an arrow that pierced both my lungs and heart.

What if you didn't have any genitals, couldn't you just go naked as a dude (because showing your nipples is okay)?
What if monkeys created civilizations on the moon?

If you're superdwarvenly tough, you can try to crawl out of the map, hide behind a tree and [t]ravel. I once traversed 200 tiles with pierced lungs, battering away elven children as they jumped me. Don't give up till the very last moment!

Though it's quite possible that pierced lungs aren't really as fatal as a pierced heart...

It ended up more like this:
The flying Iron Arrow hits you in the torso!
Your left lung has been pierced!
Your right Lung has been pierced!
Your heart has been pierced!
You have bled to death.

(I know I mangled the combat messages but that's what happened)

The town was basically empty. If I had gotten to the archer, even with both lungs pierced, I think I could have escaped and magically healed with [t]ravel, but he got lucky and hit me in the heart.
Edit: I think I did crawl for a square after I got shot.

In response to the thread topic:

Finding a magma channel and investigating it in further detail. Much, much further detail. No skills or attributes could save me from incinerating in magma after 3 turns.

It wasn't surprising in the fact that I wasn't expecting to die -- being an unstoppable character is so boring, I greeted death gratefully -- it is more the fact that it was so quick and painless.

Just checked the death sentence in Legends:

"In the early summer of 1052, Warosp died in the heat in the Pointy Jungle"

Man, I'm starting to really regret committing suicide. That is so lame. Died in the "heat"? It sounds like I fainted from heat exhaustion. Warosp could destroy an entire elven retreat without breaking a sweat; kill a demon without getting hurt. Why couldn't it say something like:

"Warosp, the mightiest warrior who ever lived, ascended to a higher plane after willingly subjecting himself to the flames of a magma pipe."

No. Warosp died of heat exhaustion.

*mutters*
Should have fought a demon naked or something . . .
