Dolomite?
« on: July 22, 2008, 03:18:48 pm »

Okay, I know nothing of this rock, or even if it really exists for real in real life, but I saw this episode of Futurama (those who have seen the show know the one I am talking about) where it was suggested that Dolomite is capable of handling the heat and pressure presented by magma and lava. Is there any validity to it, and if so, should it be considered to make Dolomite a magma-proof substance?

Admittedly the source of the premise is ludicrous, but I just thought I would throw it out there anyway.

Dolomite's very soft, and pink.  It can't handle magma.  However, it is a flux, and being a sedimentary stone, has lots of iron ore.  Flux+Iron Ore=Yay.

So despite that episode of Futurama, it's still a good stone.

I've seen the show, and I don't know which one you're talking about. I don't remember particularly many episodes where they would be dealing with magma...  there was this one with Fry's dog, but I don't remember dolomite being mentioned.

The dog was encased in Dolomite, and Fry had it cloned.

"Dolomite was first described in 1791 as the rock by the French naturalist and geologist, Déodat Gratet de Dolomieu (1750–1801) for exposures in the Dolomite Alps of northern Italy."
     --Wikipedia

So, both the rock and the mountain range were named after some french guy.

I feel horrible for thinking this, but all of a sudden a black man with an afro chatting about "the man" putting him down came up in my mind. Dear god, I think I may need help.
