embark without wagon

yeah!
and have access to otherwise inaccessable tiles.

Does require to get beasts of burden working, bring bins.
Probably an anvil is too heavy for the poor animals.

Building a depot may also prove a wasted effort.
(probably will work anyhow, but that will be a bug rather than feature)
Requiring a simcity-like 'road to nextdoors' effort from the edge of the map. (caravan arc?)

Afterthought: alternatively use goblin/elf-slaves for haulage, but at the added risk of instant animosity from relevant civs.

Could you do this by tunneling from another site and then allowing us to embark on a tunnel but choose whether to enter from inside the tunnel or above it?

...you do know you can deconstruct the wagon right?

Anyway, I think the inescapable presence of the wagon was actually a conscious design decision on Toady's part.  The classic "primitive" start, i.e. no starting supplies at all, is only do-able because the wagon yields three logs, just enough to build a trade depot and kickstart a fortress.

Oh, embark without a wagon so you can go up into mountains with just pack animals.  Yeah.

It still doesn't really work like that.  The starting wagon is quite capable of winding up where the trade wagons can't go, so the "can't embark on mountains" thing isn't tied to that anyway.

Yeah.
It seems to be tied to the adventurer 'travel' accessability.

I want to settle one of those peaks.
