The awesome screenshot thread.
« on: September 06, 2007, 09:56:00 pm »

I see a lot of one or two post threads where people show off their great screenshots. I figured, "Why not make one big thread where they can be preserved forever?"

So here it is. Post your best screenshots here!

I'll get things started.

note: If you don't know how to take screenshots: It's easy! Just press the print screen key on your keyboard, then open up your favorite image editing program (paint works fine...sort of), and hit ctrl-v (or edit-->paste). And they say there's no magic in Dwarf Fortress!

Always, always use .png or .gif for DF pictures, with no exceptions whatsoever.

I hardly ever think about the difference, which is bad because I am an art student.

.jpg = leaves artifacts (which alter the image and make it look worse) but not very noticeable with realistic pictures, like a photo or decent art.

.gif = leaves no artifacts but limits the image to 256 colors, good with non-realistic pictures, like DF screenshots

.png = leaves no artifacts, better than .gif with non-realistic pictures. Bad for tiny files (like 8 pixels by 12 pixels).

GIF can muddle up the image if the conversion is done in Paint because of its palette system.

I generally go with PNG for everything. Totally lossless, always acceptable file size. This being 2007, I'm not too concerned about saving 2KB on an image.

Unless, of course, you have a website that has 15 pages that each have an image that size used 10 times on them and viewed a thousand times a month. That 2kb turns into 300mb bandwidth.

Something similarish to this happens on the wiki.

GIF may not cause blocking like JPEG does, but I wouldn't say it doesn't change the image. GIF has a palette limitation of 256 colors. If your image has more colors than that, quality is lost.

PNG does not have this limitation, so it is a very good, if not the best, format to use.

I don't really see ANY loss at all when I save .jpg files at 100% quality using any decent program.  You can get a free one at: http://www.irfanview.com/

I'd say... realisitc photo save as 100% quality .jpg

256 color things make sure it is first actually 256 colors (save it as a 256 color .bmp) and then save as .png or .gif

16 color things (DF pics) save as a 16 color .bmp to make sure and then turn into a .png or .gif

Depending upon circumstances the .png or .gif will vary in which one is smaller for low color images.  For example: if you save the above photo as a monochrome .bmp (pure black and white only) and then a .png it's VERY small and the only loss is turning gray into white.

The hard part is finding decent image hosting that will let you put up something other than a .jpg...

Well, to get this thread back on track:

This was taken shortly after a huge bloody battle on the bridge upstream. I just love the bloody river effects.

Isn't blood supposed to be dark red? That looks more like ichor to me.

The colors are actually adjustable in the init.txt file.

A group of migrants arrived just in time to smack into a blendec patrol.

Luckily they brought a marksdwarf with him. I only had two casualties.
