Every few years during the Historical Section of the world gen on Vista, it freezes up.  If I click the game window, it goes Not Responding, and then about 30 seconds later it will start working again, and then a few years down the road it freezes up again, and I have to click again to go Not Responding, and then it wll work again about 30 seconds later, rinse and repeat.  Seems to start after year 100 or so.

That has more to do with Windows than anything else. It's because the game is working in the background, but not bothering to update the screen or accept input. This happens with any Windows program that is in DEEP thought.

nothing to worry about.

now that that I find myself suddenly with my RAM halved, i notice that DF leaves little for other programs to run 'parallel', even to the point of ctr-alt-del  'WTF is going on?' viewing systenresource demands.

I had winamp, several firefox windoes, DF, and a fileeditor  opened, of which only winamp was responsive according to windows. I was genning a big world at the time.

Genning takes a lot of CPU cycles and pretty much RAM too...I guess lacking RAM it puts an extra load on the CPU by using the swapfile.

Try disabling any nonessential programs running in the background.

Stop making normal size worlds.  Every single other size of world takes seconds to gen.  EVERY SINGLE ONE.  I've not yet seen any world lock up my system, except once when I tried to gen a normal sized world.

It does lock up with custom entities though, even on medium and small sized worlds, given a bit of time.
