Well, I don't want to be part of any umiman pile-on.  I hope we can all assume that both sides are approaching this in good faith so we don't need to get personal.  We all love the game or we wouldn't be jawing about it, yeah?  I think the main bone of contention isn't the criticism that adventure mode seems more directionless to a certain style of player--it does.  The disagreement centers more on tone than anything else--a thread titled "this sucks" was probably guaranteed to attract some defensive and combative feelings.  In that case there's not much actual disagreement, and most of the discussion is little more than a personality war that's just going to escalate until both sides say foolish and angry things to no purpose.

Or did that already happen?  On the internet, no less.  :-D

"this sucks" ranks right up there with "multiplayer" and "interface" in the title for attracting all kinds of hate.

"Having faith" that the bridge will not fall, implies that the bridge itself isn't that trustworthy. It's not that different from "I pray that the bridge will hold my weight."

That was so astute and level-headed it made me weep with joy.

I'm pretty sure Anu hit it on the head. I think these two key phrases are also setting all the people off:

"because God made it that way"

"we actually own Toady One"

You can see those two phrases repeated endlessly by my detractors even though there's no relevance.

*sips 100 Plus*

Kinda interesting actually, makes me wants to try out a social experiment.

I usually just lurk, but had to jump on the "pile" here.  It's a little unusual to see someone as coherent as umiman act so clueless.

Umiman:  Now that your questions have been answered, do you feel a little better about the game's future?  The reason so many folks jumped on you may have less to do those inflammatory phrases than the fact that your questions were already answered in Toady's logs before you even asked them.

A stupid person acting stupid surprises no one, but when a smart young fellow such as yourself acts stupid, it's very frustrating to read.  I don't want Toady to think that his fanbase is comprised of lazy kids, so yeah, I'm gonna slap you on the back of your head here and say "TRY HARDER, KID.  FOCUS.  READ.  THINK.  Sometimes the answers you're looking for are already posted in a prominent location."

You seem to moving on to the "Uhhh, it was just a troll, yeah, that's it, I was winding you up this whole time" phase so I'll cut myself off here.  I may have made some stupid posts when I was a younger man, too, now that I think about it.  Good to see that young people are playing this game too.

wendigo: Could you show me the dev logs that explain why adventurers no longer get quests to kill other adventurers then? It would be much easier. If it's there, then yay! Conflict settled and I'll go get my eyes checked.

Also, this might be asking a bit much. But could you quote for me, just this once, where exactly it specifically states in the logs where an adventurer can hire other like-minded individuals and go on a personal war? I mean, without needing speculation that "if this is there, than this must be there too". Explicitly stated, since "[my] questions were already answered in Toady's logs before [ I ] even asked them."

I understand your concern, no matter how patronizing it is. But I'm a stubborn ass who refuses to back down until the ultimatum incontrovertible is found. It makes me look like a fool, but at least the final verdict can't be denied.

umiman remember the endless sleep glitch in version 0.28.181.39a?

Basically the same thing is happening but with a different feature, and it is eventually going to be fixed in one of the later versions of the army arc, we'll have the ability to start wars, we will also bloody have less peace and more bloodshed throughout the civilizations...

If you really are having such a hard time getting anyone to give you missions to kill your past adventurers or getting your allies to kill a village along with your adventurer, you really should of have put this in the bug report forum or the general discussion forum where it belongs as the peace is a problem for both adventure mode, and fortress mode.

And besides... This IS an alpha not a complete game.

Okay, yeah. I'm blind. I'll go get my eyes checked then. Thanks for clearing it up concisely.

I think many people such as myself were confused as to why these old hardcoded events were not just left in until their replacements were implemented.  For some reason, such as difficulties integrating the old hardcoded events with the new worldgen, Toady must have taken them out.  While I wish that many of these things were still in the game, if they were taken out it must have been for good reason.  The point at which they caused more harm than good in making the game was likely reached. (At least that is my theory as to why those events were removed)

Just as a note:  Toady talked about something similar to the complaint leveled in this thread back in his dev notes back on July 4th (at least, I think it's relevant), and noted that the more fun things weren't intended for this release.

Changing conflicts from being hardcoded (ie, goblins and kobolds will always fight dwarves, humans and elves or, more simply, Good races vs Evil races) to being based on abstract concepts (civ A hates civ B because of religious/ethical/social differences) is going to cause some growing pains.  Right now, just the civilizations (top level) know how to deal with these conflicts.  Individual members, who used to have hardcoded knowledge of who and who not to fight (human + goblin = fight; human + dwarf = friendly), now have to use whatever moral/ethical guidelines their civilization has to determine who's friendly and who isn't ("Your civ worships a God I hate, but you personally killed the titan which slaughtered my whole family, so I'll be friendly towards you". Or something like that).

Give it another major release and I bet you'll have some pretty awesome conflicts.  Right now, we're stuck just playing around with some nifty world-gen stuff that doesn't yet have much impact on regular gameplay.

Let me just state this: If I see another "it will be fixed soon" or "go back to the old versions" put in here, I will personally make sure that every computer legally sold world wide comes with a hand made to deliver a slap to the next user that logs on to this site and repeats a phrase said by three or more people on a thread. I am sure that he gets the point by know.

As far as I know, I really didn't know that you could do the aformentioned things in the previous version. It really would add more interest to the game, and I would be very happy when it does come back/if it comes back/when it is implimented.

And umiman is right and you should know it. Especially after all he said about killing friends and dining with enemies (or going to the elves and dining with your friends on the menu, but that is beside the point). Just because he was cornered by enough posters to say something he wouldn't have under normal circumstances dosn't mean we should pile up on him.

As a closing comment lets be honest, having that feature would make the game much more interesting, and it would be nice not to deal with making a specific world stop at a specific date in order to make things happen.
