Oh come on, umiman! You know I share your belief.

I just assaulted an elven town with goblin drunks. Lets just say I beheaded the goblins for their disloyalty -- or perhaps their apathy. It was kind of like they were just along for the show. Well they got a show alright

Again, I think everyone agrees that the current version is somewhat lacking in interactive conflict.  But my question to you is, was this version even intended to provide it?  If not, why should we expect it to?  This version -does- pave the way for interactive conflict in a future version, which is exciting.  I'm not talking about some mystical far-off time, reading tea leaves, or putting blind complacent faith in Toady--it's all to be found on the development page, and the completion isn't hopelessly far away.  What rankles most with me is the idea that this version should represent entirely what the completed Army Arc will be, when it's merely setting the stage for it.  With such a big change to the conflict mechanics, did you expect it all to get done in one fell swoop?  In terms of just the Army Arc, it still seems to me you're saying "this house doesn't work right" when only the foundations have been laid.

As for this:

Quote
I mean, I can understand the ruins thing (as much as I hate it) and the chasm attacks (as much as I hate it) and the magma ambushes (as much as I hate it) and the river ambushes (as much as I hate it). But this is the very simple, I kill your countrymen by the droves and then drink martinis with your enemies. EXACT SOME BLOODY REVENGE.

Even in the previous version, questgivers would give quests to kill previous adventurers and civs would fight with the other civs who sponsored those adventurers. It has always been this way. It makes perfect sense. The very simple question now is: why has this been turned off or made so frigging hard to do?

Did you want the hardcoded conflicts to remain in place even as the entire conflict system is overhauled?  Is that even possible?  Or are you arguing that the new world-gen conflicts shouldn't have been released until they were made more interactive?  I'm just trying to understand where you're coming from here.  Apologies if I've misread your posts.

I don't agree. I can think of two things said in this thread that are completely full of crap:

"That argument is the DF equivalent of saying "because God made it that way".

Like Syreal said. Think about it, when people talk about DF, how long do they spend talking about their architecture or their trading or all those other peacenik stuff in comparison to how awesome so and so fighter killed 200 batmen who swarmed up from the chasm, attacking a lone hammerdwarf on a bridge?

It's not peace that compels fun, unfortunate or not. It's conflict. We need more conflict."

Please don't tell people the game has to be changed to fit your expectation of what it should be. Sieges were a pain. Wars were a pain. I want to be able to wander around in adventure mode and kill megabeasts, and explore. I don't *want* what you want so for me the game isn't broken.

That could be just a disagreement in perspective, but you seem to think that fufilling your personal view and wants -- or the views and wants of the people who "love adventure mode" -- is more important than the game creator fixing up the things he needs to do.

Right now we have people bitching about -

1. Graphics
2. Stupid bugs like mandates being broken by caravans leaving with items they brought
3. Interface things (levers notes, stacks)
4. Added Dwarf Fortress mode features

And so on. Instead of moving forward on any of those, you want to

1. Suggest that tearing down part of the "fixed functionality" in the process of creating a more "fluid functionality" is wrong and that we should go back to what the "2-d version offered with some of the upgrades as far as adventuring goes". Takes time away from the more important things to a much larger fraction of the community, so that's illogical.

2. Suggest that the customers (the players) should be treated like shareholders -- in which case there is a much bigger payoff in fixing up the dwarf fortress aspects , the presentation arc, and so forth than on doing what you want -- not enough people are upset about it. Again, your position is illogical

3. Ask for why these things were removed -- and then when you're told they've been removed because the game is in an alpha state and that Toady is changing and removing things and adding things all the time and that you can't assume that just because it got torn out now it won't be fixed soon, you blow up and say that's like the government throwing people in gulags. Yay, drama bomb.

I was originally attracted to register at this forum after lurking a long time due to the maturity level of many of the posters. But you're whining, you're basically upset because you don't have what you think is important even at the cost of moving the whole game forward, and you're being rude. Anu and Sergius were pretty clear cut, but I'll be blunter and less polite:

STFU. It will get fixed and altered when more important things get fixed, like tons of other things that need to get fixed that are just as irritating to other people.

Syreal:  :'(

Anu: Yeah. Big misunderstanding there. I never once mentioned expecting any new interactive conflict from anything. I did say I'm disappointed at the road we have arrived at, but I didn't say anything else. So, I'm not sure where you got that entire first paragraph from.

For the second point. I didn't talk about the entire system or any overhauling or anything. I just asked why the features were removed. I'd understand it if it in any way affected the new legends worldgen (which it shouldn't, logically), but no explanation was given.  Hence this thread. Remember that the question starts with a "why".

Anything else you want me to clarify?

... and as I was typing... another hysterical person jumps up to mess things up again. Where's Superman when you need him?

I don't see what's so hard to understand. You ask "why are X and Y" removed. The answer is, once and again "because X and Y are hardcoded, and the idea is that conflict will emerge in a natural way, not because (goblin + dwarf) = war, and (elf - trees) = war, and eventually there will be conflict like the old days, but you can't have both, and the new 'conflict engine' is going to change that so that you have even better conflict but right now it's not exactly 100% working, but it will be, and by the time you're adventuring, chances are there isn't a war going on, and probably you can cause wars in the near future when it gets correctly implemented but Toady can't just leave the old hardcoded crap in if he's ever going to test the new dynamc crap". And then you just go "but WHY! because God Said So???" and now it turns out we're all hysterical and debating by proxy and whatnot.

Just answer this: do you want a reply AT ALL unless it is coming straight from the horse's mouth? If Toady isn't gonna reply to the thread himself, are we all supposed to keep away from it and not try to explain anything to you? Any possible explanation that isn't just "me too dude! I also think this sucks! high five!" is going to be dismissed as being drama queens, victims mass hysteria, or getting compared to sending people to Death Camps and everyone being complacent about it?

I don't see what other explanation is possible. To sum up: the old stuff had to go, if we were to have the new stuff. The new stuff right now is halfway done and we're supposed to be testing it. It works like crap right now, and when it's working properly it will be great and the sky will be blue and the earth will be covered by the blood of your enemies. And nobody is telling you to shut up and don't complain. They're only telling you to shut up about telling us to shut up about how God Made It So or whatever.

Peace.

Ok, just to add:

When this "army arc" is finished, with any luck, not only will you be able to provoke wars by going to a random town and starting slaughtering peasants, but you'll be able to do so by making out with the goblin princess and kidnapping her, or planting evidence of whatever. And when war blows up, you'll not just get to see armies of elves and humans going at each other throats, you'll even get a formal invitation to join the army, get into skirmishes yourself, assault missions, the works. Who knows. But the old hardcoded stuff had to go. It just had to go. goblin = war = TRUE just won't cut it anymore.

Four pages of everyone explaining, "The beginnings of the Army Arc = why adventure mode is boring with civs and conflicts"

With umiman still saying after four pages, "Why is adventure mode boring no one has explained anything to me"

It's like talking to a brick wall.

This is why there are so few good, free games that actually have creators who listen to their players.

Umiman asked for Superman a while ago.  That's Supermen though.  Matrica is better.  It has CGI and katanas.
