This sucks...
« on: July 20, 2008, 10:36:21 am »

I've been trying to get civilizations to fight each other in adventurer but to no avail. Had a dwarf adventurer along with three goblin mercs who were actually ambushers in an older fortress slaughter two hundred or so elves before retiring in a goblin civ. Then I had an elf adventurer kill five or six goblins before retiring in a human city. Then I had a human adventurer kill more humans and retire in another human city. And so on and so forth.

The end result?

Vegan McElfpants, druid: "Ah, we're quite untroubled here"
Human Humanhuman, axe lord: "Ah, we're quite untroubled here"
Obok, demon: "Ah, we're quite untroubled here"

What gives? It used to be so easy to set everyone off. Now everyone is so keen on peace and tranquility. My adventuring party only ever has me attacking, while the rest of my crew happily sit around discussing flowers with the ones attacking me.

What age is it? Perhaps they're at an age of civility or something.

I don't think the age has anything to do with it...

But it's the age of Heroes. The last megabeast is unreachable, on an island.

Pack some food and swim there. It might take an hour or two, though.

That's not the point man. Besides, megabeasts are weak targets. It was much more fun being able to lead a squad of drunks to slaughter an entire city of hundreds. Now that we have proper mercs back in the game, I was looking forward to leading real armies into battle.

From what I can see now, unless you're lucky enough to have civs ending at war with one another, you're stuck with everyone at perpetual peace. This may be harsh, but the game is actually getting more and more boring to play since inception in terms of combat as even megabeasts are practically nonexistent in-game unless you ended your worlds at year 1. I hope we get more actual conflict and gameplay back in the game instead of flavour text.

You can respawn the same history and world seed at a date set to end in a year that you know a war is going on.

Maybe you have to start a fortress to update history? I don't know, just a thought...

Now people are even reporting goblin and kobold caravans. ARGH! What on earth is happening to all the combat?! This is very, very boring!

Kogan: Doesn't that seem like pointless work for something is actually already implemented in game, just removed for some reason? This is more of a protest against peace and tranquility.

Anyway, I believe that the goblins actually ended at war with the elves for reasons I will explain below, but when recruited in adventurer, are just at peace with them.

Sean: I tried. Here's what happened:
1. fortress got ambushed by goblins, yay!
2. fortress is overwhelmed and everyone dies.
3. an adventurer from a different dwarven civ goes and recruits the ambushers who are lazing around chatting.
4. rampage on the elves!!!! glee!
5. all the goblins die while adventurer runs away to a goblin dark fortress.
6. recruit more goblins from dark fortress of the same civilization as before and attack same elven retreat.
7. adventurer gets owned as goblins look at flowers grow.

I'm betting you that someplace, somewhere, the conflict tag is turned off in adventurer but is on sometimes in dwarf mode.

Yeah, being a goblin adventurer and having a chat with the leader of human civs is quite disappointing.

What do you expect when the Army Arc is being worked on?

You're right, Davion.

But it is also our duty as quasibeta-testers to let Toady know when something isn't quite as fun as it used to be. Don't you think he'd rather know now, when the game is still fun, or a year later when all the fun has been sucked out of adventure mode.

Granted, I still have hope that with the completion of the army arc, things will get interesting again.

That argument is the DF equivalent of saying "because God made it that way".

Like Syreal said. Think about it, when people talk about DF, how long do they spend talking about their architecture or their trading or all those other peacenik stuff in comparison to how awesome so and so fighter killed 200 batmen who swarmed up from the chasm, attacking a lone hammerdwarf on a bridge?

It's not peace that compels fun, unfortunate or not. It's conflict. We need more conflict.

Just to build on what Davion said, make sure to look back on the old versions. They had a lot of cooler stuff going on at first glance. But realize most of it was hardcoded in. What Toady wants is for events like that to happen naturally.

So once wars are more fleshed out, with better motivations and such, then I'm sure massive conflict will show up again. Hell, once we can send out armies in DF mode, you'll basically be able to piss the fuck off whatever civ you desire.

Charming. So, hmm, let's see. Now that we've got worldgen doing some pretty fancy calculations with zerg elves and whatnot. Suddenly some basic thing that has been around pretty much forever has been removed for some arbitary reason.

I mean, I can understand the ruins thing (as much as I hate it) and the chasm attacks (as much as I hate it) and the magma ambushes (as much as I hate it) and the river ambushes (as much as I hate it). But this is the very simple, I kill your countrymen by the droves and then drink martinis with your enemies. EXACT SOME BLOODY REVENGE.

Even in the previous version, questgivers would give quests to kill previous adventurers and civs would fight with the other civs who sponsored those adventurers. It has always been this way. It makes perfect sense. The very simple question now is: why has this been turned off or made so frigging hard to do?

Maybe all that's needed is a warning for version 39x. Like "don't download this version, if you want to have wars n stuff, download version 38x instead. 39x is in a transitional stage" or something.
