Then you find out that your savage dogs are infected, the cattle are infected, there's no fuel for the generators, and your alarm signals the entire zombie horde in the city to your home.

Zombie Cows!

Rather than having them directly force you to mine adamantine, I would suggest that they give you strange moods that require adamantine. "Dig out the adamantine or Urist here goes insane and dies" is suitably vicious.

(It occurs to me that you can probably get "Lovecraft" as the random name of your fortress. That's when you know you're screwed.)

Silleh, zombies arnt magic, they are just highly mutated using a zombie virus. For my type of zombies, if you say, stab a zombie in the spine with a machete, its body will go limp. For my zombies, they need to eat or they die eventually, but way later than humans would. Any ways, their body is basically preserved kind of like being prepared for a funeral only the brain is still semi-alive but retarded, and still sending and geting signals to and from the body. :D isn't debating about things that don't exist fun?

Very much so.  ;)

And I would reckon that you would get the same effect if you broke a zombies neck. Just incase you can't reach its spine from the front.

Obvious, I know.  :D

personaly i have given alot of thought to this but i trust the zombie survival guide since that gives some of the worst cases but im not big on guns or other ranged weapons
Rule 1 organize before they rise -my stuff is already all together
rule 2 they feel no fear why should you- you will all die someday just take abunch with you
rule 3 use your head cut off thiers- this is why i prefer melee weapons
rule 4 blades dont need reloading- ditto 3
rule 5 ideal protection tight clothes short hair- armor= canned food
rule 6 get up the staircase then destroy it- self explained
rule 7 get out of the car get onto the bike- more moble but i'd bunker or walk
rule 8 keep moving, keep low, keep quiet, keep alert!-ditto 7
rule 9 no place is safe only safer- thats why you should always prepare to move even if you plan to stay
rule 10 the zombie may be gone but the treat lives on -advice to take to heart
I follow these rules but also some of the others metioned in the book like learning kill and imobilize moves from different matial arts like muy thai and jujitsu let alone being a historical reenactor allows me access to useful things like flint and steel fire starting kits and things like butterknife(my two handed battle ready broad sword) and things of the like such as leather outfits and gear.

Then you find out that your savage dogs are infected,
That's what the gun is for.

the cattle are infected,
Impossible if you keep them inside.

there's no fuel for the generators,
Solar power.  ::)

and your alarm signals the entire zombie horde in the city to your home.
Turn it off, duh.

Weapon range is a must. The bowie knife serves as a useful item assuming you have a long pole (it doesn't even have to be a standard staff. Just chop off the broom end of a broom) and enough duct tape to combine the two without worrying about the device breaking. Having a good polearm will allow you to fight with a relative comfort zone.

Of course, the real way to prepare for the zombies is to live real life like Dwarf Fortress. Make sure you have a nice stockpile of crops/plump helmets/growable trees/bamboo/etc. Bonus points for a magma moat  ;D

Technically speaking, most of us would be the zombies instead of survivors in every scenario. I recommend we move to discussing what we would do if we were zombies hunting down those squirmy flesh-blobs.

Hey, as a zombie, you have an agenda too. Your semideadness isn't going to last forever if you don't have nourishment. The more zombies there are, the more survivor you have to share. Also, there's a high chance of cannibalism, so you're in danger if your zombie posse doesn't have enough food. But you're also in danger when wandering alone.

It's a big problem. Being a zombie is not easy.

I'd rather be a ghost.

A cyborg ghost.
