DF in 3D?
« on: July 18, 2008, 06:52:21 pm »

Well I saw a few mysterious references on the forum to playing dwarf fortress in 3D.  Could someone please enlighten me on this? Because that would be groin-grabbingly awsome. ;D

There is a 3-D visualizer for seeing what fortresses could look like in 3-D, I don't think there is more than that though.

3Dwarf Visualizer lets you look at your Fortress in 3D. Won't let you play in it, though.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

Also an older version of Dwarf fortress (like the one Boatmurdered was based upon) is what they call the 2D version as there was only one "plane" to make your fortress (no Z- levels, ie: up or down).

That makes the current version the 3D version as there are multiple Z-levels (there are height differences and you can build rooms above eachother).

Ahh thanks mates; the visualizer looks cool.  As for a realtime game in 3D, well that would probably kill my system anyways. ;)

Actually, with some simple graphics, you could probably pull it off pretty easily. DF uses hardly any GPU power at the moment, so I bet a 3D interface wouldn't be a big drain on FPS, so long as you have a decent videocard.

There are three things I know about dwarves:
1. They've got beards. Even the women.
2. They're short. Especially the women.
3. They're Scottish.

the link to the visualiser is an invalid one.

BTW is that image (the one of the units) on the Mike Mayday site a teaser?

for I have used a similar tileset (possibly even his) in 38c and that looked more like the screenshot than the more detailed ones featured.

Sorry, I had some odd problems with the post editor that annoyed me so much that I apparently forgot to put the actual link in. Or something.

In any case, try the link now, I fixed it. Maybe.
