No skill from prone opponents
« on: July 18, 2008, 10:47:57 am »

That's weird.  I don't get skill points when I try to smash a prone bear with a hammer.  But, I do get those points when the bear stands up and I smash him with a hammer.  Is that supposed to happen?

Let's put it in reall life terms: does it take more skill to smash someone upside the head with a ball-peen hammer while they're asleep in bed, or running terrified for their life?

Go research that and let us know.

Depending on who the prone person is, it might. Desperation is a wonderful defence, and while they can't dodge, they can still block. And if they had a weapon, your legs and lower body is in extreme danger, since its a bit harder blocking an attack with a shield from directly below.

Let's put it into real life terms: does it take more skill to hit me upside the head with your warhammer if I'm standing and facing you with my +Iron Long Sword+, or when I'm laying on the ground trying to kick you in the groin with my *Adamantine Spiked High Boots*?

I say you should still get the experience, unless the opponent is sleeping or otherwise unconscious. (However, if the "ungodly sleeping reflexes" bug is still about, you get experience then as well.)

It was fixed. You can stab sleeping people without them blocking, but they still won't wake up.

And if you're BOTH on the ground and they've latched onto something precious? I'd say the skill involved would probably be somewhere in the range of 'triple' to 'you're out of your depth, peewee'.
You get experience for strangling comatose paraplegics, so why shouldn't you get experience for managing to save your natches from being torn off by a hydra that's missing one leg?
Because armless creatures have surprisingly powerful bites?

At this point, skill gains are equal to the opponent's roll(s).  It should probably still give you a bit, since you are still practicing your impeccable form on the unconscious opponent, but in part I wanted to hold off until there were some more general combat skills, so that you'd still feel a penalty if you just practice against the unconscious.
