[39c] Merchant Caged Animals are all dead
« on: July 18, 2008, 10:24:50 am »

The merchants from my Dwarven civilizations were nice enough to bring the animals I had requested, sadly however, they were all corpses in cages by the time they had arrived.  Not sure if this is intentional or not, but it's sorta gruesome getting cages with corpses of various animals inside in by trading.

Are you in a freezing biome?  I.e. on a glacier or tundra?  Because any animals in cages brought by traders on those maps freeze to death so you're left with corpses.

Yup, that seems to be the case.  Kinda odd though that the caged animals die, but the animals in my fort are fine.

I had this same question once, a very long time ago. I agree that it makes no sense at first, since the animals you brought with you had to have survived the cold somehow. But hey, always look on the bright side: cheap cages with free butcherable meat!

I once had a place so cold that a few minutes after embarking all my animals(war dogs and horses) just died, instantly without any reason. I have to say it was pretty cool, untill the ice wolves ate all my dwarves but 1.

"Griznak go to Dwarven fortress of Frozenbreeches the Bald Tundra of Freezing, steal many pretty things. Why Griznak freezing? Griznak wore Griznak's heaviest loincloth!"

As far as the animals in cages freezing, it kinda makes sense... if your animals are out and about, they can run around or huddle or whatever to keep warm, plus the magical Animal Care aura that appropriate Dwarves radiate. In cages, they're just exposed to the elements, tightly confined, and sitting on frozen zinc. You'll get dogcicles and kitten-pops in no time.

The scary thing is that with a magma-safe cage you can have a kitten survive in a room completely full of magma, yet it still dies from the cold temperature during the trader's journey. ;)

Actually in the past versions the animals would die on very cold climates, but not always all and not right at the start. Now i am playing in a warm biome and they are arriving all dead all the time. I do think its a bug.

Ok, something really weird just happened. I settled on a glacier andthe first caravan just got here. I traded my mule and horse that had pulled my wagon for some booze and dead creatures in cages.

After awhile ALL the merchant's animals died. The ones that had carried their goods, AND their wagons. The animals i had just traded died too. Once their animals died, the ones who came with the wagons went crawling away while the others stuck around. Right now it says that they've left on their journey, but they're still here. I'm going to deconstruct the depot and see if they go away.

Edit: It worked, and they left everything behind. I think they were trying to load their 'dead' wagons.

I hope the idiots use muskoxen next time.

Naw... "Wagons" are their own creature. I'd move your TD indoors, otherwise you'll never get any goods sold back to the mountainhome, and you'll never get Immigrants. That would be awful.
