The Great Mountain to Desert Piping Expedition

Okay; I've had a really cool idea.

I want to pipe a cave river all the way along the world to a desert.

Then I want to irrigate the desert and grow plants there.

This will require many fortresses.
Here's how the plan's going to go;
1. Make a fortress near a cave river.
2. Channel to the edge of that local 3x3 region.
3. Abandon, make a new fort next to it, but make it 3x4 so we can overlap that old one to continue the channel.
4. Do this all the way to the desert.
5. Pumps up to high tower
6. Walls at top.
7. Pumps push water up to the top, along the walls, and create a lovely waterfall in the center of the desert.
8. Farm plots.
9. ????
10. PROFIT!

So, anybody want to try this? Or shall I go by myself and see if it's possible? Because then we could do a community fortress where we pipe from a glacier to a desert across the whole world.

Not to kill the buzz or anything, but I all but certain this won't work.  The most obvious reasons are that you can't start a new fort covering any part of an old one, and you can't designate tiles all the way to a map edge.  The best you could do is get water to a map edge, pump it into the air, and hope it crosses over worldmap tiles into the fort, which I'm 99% certain can't happen.

But hey, don't let me talk you out of it.  You might break into a whole new world feature.

Yeah, I can kind of see how this isn't working. I really wish I could have overlapped a bit of my old fort, because then I can continue the pipe. I like the idea of spilling into the air, it's worth a shot.

Raised bridges will block water, and can be built right to the edge of the map...

I have an idea now then; the last few feet will be pumped to surface level, and then raised bridges on either side of the above-ground water. Then, on the next region section, what ho! A gush of water at the side, channel it, contine onward, rinse + repeat.

Windmills + pumps'll be no bother.

You also would have to span the entire length of the localmap with your fort. IIRC, you can't embark two forts on the same localmap.

If you can pump the water up, you could make an aqueduct using bridges and raised drawbridges.  You can build those out to the edge tiles.

Then, if the water does indeed spill over into the next tile, All you have to do is build the rest of the aqueduct from there.

Exactly what I plan to do. I'll finish my current fort and I'll get started the test forts soon enough. For the sake of testing, I'll use [NO_SLEEP] and [SPEED:1].

You can move water around the local region, but not into the next world tile. Ah well. Pretty cool though, it works to a degree. Perhaps toady would be kind enough to allow overlapping fortresses next time?

Well, you'd have to start in the mountains and keep pace with the water as it flows- but that would work, totally.

Would make for an interesting short story... particularly if you went through extremely dangerous areas.

Better yet, get the water to run thru a goblin fortress, (in 39c, they're friendly unless there's a war or something), then raid it as part of your adventure. Kill the demon and chase it's corpse as the water sweeps into the desert.
