Armok help us - Undead everywhere
« on: July 18, 2008, 06:26:05 am »

I just embarked next to a pit in a nice haunting environment in the biggest purple mountains I have ever seen .. in 39c ( the new prospector rules by the way :)

and what the crap .. I surveyd the map by eye, when I saw about 10 skeletal troglodytes.
allright I said to myself, this will be fun. Then I opened the unit screen.

There are about 11 pages of undead critters .. ranging from naked moledogs to trolls !!

since I am just as curious as you lot .. I will give you the condensed list :)
( screenshots would just push it here :)

7 dwarfs :)
2 Muskoxens ( got lucky :)
4 dogs
vs.

6 skel. TROLLS !

46 skel Troglodytes
46 skel naked mole dogs
39 skel cave swallowmen
39 skel ratmen

6 skel large rats
6 skel giant bats
6 skel giant moles

4 skel Fire Imps
3 skel mountain goats
1 Magma Man
1 Fire Man

and

2 deceased skel Frogman

sums up to

203 + 2 critters that are after my hide and I didn't bring an anvil :)

so .. I hope the first caravan makes it .. and I hope I will be independent from the surface after that. ;)
Any gobbo to reach my fortress may enter and gets a free ale :)

Maybe I will post how it went, but since I can only play once in a while, I would not count on it.
But I will post the seed as soon as I find it :)

Created in DF v0.28.181.39c.

Okay .. I confess, I can't upload screenshots ..

so the site is in the 7th Tile of the Worldmap from the left in the first row of map,
xxxxxxX
there is a 3x3 cluster of mountains around a volcano,
the site is in the lower left of the cluster.
xxx
x^x
Xxx
I took a 6x6 embarking zone with the magma vent as the upper left corner.
( for those who don't use prospector, its here : xx
                                                                xx
                                                                xEEEEEE

the site got, as said, a magma vent,
chalk in the plains, and hematite veins right next to the embarking zone
a underground river somewhere on the right corner of the embarking zone
and 6 tiles of chasm
alas no adamantine.

In world creation screen make a new param. set and save it. You'll get a new txt file in /data/init/worldgen.txt.
Look inside and you'll see your world settings. This file stores all the info about your world gen settings.
You can change them manually or copy-paste from this page (these are settings for a "medium" world, replace them/make a new param. name with these in your worldgen.txt and generate a "medium" world, make sure the seeds are like these in-game).

This is wicked.

Someone must make a community fort.
Imagine traders and goblins trying to get through this mess!

I once had traders spawn right in front of a huge demonic rat pack, and they killed all the rats.
So I figure it would be that on a much large scale.

It doesn't look this bad at the moment, most of the undead are trapped in the chasm, so if I don't go near there it will be allright. But I am sure glad I brought 2 steel picks
I reached summer, and allready laid out my magma forging area, and build my entrance defense tower.
Also the first troglodytes I sighted seem to wander near my fort and an alligator is wandering around.
My next goal is to find the underground river, since all lakes were empty to begin with ( filled with some drops of rain though, but always dry up again. )

My Gate will just be a small tower above a channeled and rebuild floor.

W = Wall, ^ = Trap, < >, X = Stairs, D = Trade depot, - floor
= = Drawbridge  D = Door
Ground Floor                   First Underground

w< D DD DD<w            W>W  <<<   W>W
w< DD  DDD<w            W>D   <<<   W>W
wX DD  DDDXw            W>D   <<<   W>W
w- DD  DDD-w            W^WWDWWW^W
w- DD    DDD-w           W^^^^^^^^ W
wwwwwwwww            WWWWWWWWW

above there are two storeys with fortifications on the second for archers
this layout should keep the entrance-dance outside of enemys range

around the tower I will build a 1 tile wide shooting gallery for intruders

the first year went by uneventfull, the caravan luckily used my road and did not in any way get eaten by any skelettal crap.
I am now happy owner of a shiny new iron anvil.
after this I forged 2 iron grates and finally got around to open my magma business
I found myself a nice underground river, without using the stocks menu ( i found out, why it didn't work when i finally dug to the river ) with a nice 11 level waterfall into a chasm.

My 2 legendary miners knocked out 4 skelettal goats, while occupied as temporary masons to speed up my entrance design :)

Spring brought elves and whopping 26 immigrants.
I bought some booze, wooden weapons and cloth from the elves and ignored them.
After they embarked the met a kobold thief which they smacked up good :)
( fast enough that my new formed military could not reach them in time )

the larder invaders consisted of :

1 furnace op - yai
1 weapon smith - yai 2 furnace ops :)

1 weaver - go forth and count stuff ( he is taking the fortress accountant job from my armorsmith )

1 butcher
1 grower
1 herbalist - yai .. that makes 4 food producers ( 2 kitchen, 1 field dwarves )

1 mechanic - yai
1 siege operator - why not .. another mechanic
( actually they are builders now - mason, mechanic, architect  )

1 animal trainer - yo grab that x-bow

1 dyer
1 potash maker
another herbalist
1 fishworker( on a map with no water, i found the river after the immigrants arrived )
1 fisherdwarf
- guys .. since i can't do it myself, why don't you go off and hit yourselfes in the face ?

6 peasants and 3 children, a dog, a mule and a cow calf

and just as i am writing .. the new weaponsmith got possessed .. stormed into my magma forge and
started working with three copper bars .. crap .. I allready melted steel .. why copper ..
lets wait how it turns out :

while we are waiting .. I also dug out living pods for everybody, some nice quarters for my soon to be mayor and a nice room for the accountant.
Also some nice shooting ranges ( with arrow recycling ) and barracks.

Another fun fact .. man this guy is biding his time .. I found my first vein of bituminous coal just 20
tiles away from the magma shaft, while digging out the room for the magma industry.

aaaand .. he is ready : here we have : Tokthatitur "Scornlutes", a copper mace,
this is a copper mace.  All craftsdwarfship is of the highest quality.
This object is adorned with hanging rings of Copper and menaces with spikes of Copper.
On the item is an image of a thick crescent in Copper.

Not bad .. now I can train the weaponsmith in furnace operating without a bad conscience :)

for training purposes and clutterfree digging I assigned my 5 bowless recruits as miners, while my legendarys smooth out the fortress.

my next project will be my underground watertower. therefore i will build a floor beneath the waterfall,
so I have a nice filled resservoir :)
hmmm .. to prevent flooding, i should include some grates ..
