[39c] Healthcare still fatal at best
« on: July 18, 2008, 01:27:25 am »

There's another thread along these lines, but I thought I'd make this one to make sure this one gets drilled in. The current fatality rate among wounded dwarves is extremely high mainly because nobody brings them food or water despite occasionally (50% chance) get rescued, even with idlers and the current job cancellation bugfix. Anything beyond a yellow injury is a sure death unless the dwarf has some sort of miracle happen for him.

However this is not ALWAYS the case. Occasionally water and fed does arrive - the issue is that it's so rare that fatalities ensue.

I'll need another save.  The food/watering rate in my test saves is 100%.

I'm having this problem too. My star Carpenter and Craftsdwarf are dying, and they were in bed, but weren't getting help. These are yellow injuries, too.

As a note: I didn't have buckets made before they got injured. When they went to bed, I made some buckets, but no luck.

I tried removing their bedrooms in hopes that they would go to the barracks and get treatment, but no luck there.

Save my Dwarves!

EDIT: As a note, a dwarf will die of starvation/thirst shortly after the game loads. This is a different dwarf entirely, who went nuts after I didn't have things for his mood.

Works fine for me. As soon as I started it up, both resting dwarves got water. It took a short bit for the carpenter to get food, but still happened fairly quick. I was going to build a bucket to see if that'd jump-start the process, but they both were taken care of before it finished being made. Took about half as long as it took for the carpenter to die of thirst.

I am a total and complete fool.

I was still running 39b. I could have sworn I updated. I am so sorry. Everything worked perfectly.

If anyone wants me, I'll be hanging out with my shame in the corner.

... Strangely, shortly after I loaded your save, I had a couple dwarves that refused to be rescued. No big deal, though, as most of them had either mangled lungs or broken nervous system parts. One or two should have been fine, though ...

Here's another save:
http://rapidshare.com/files/130891802/Dying-dwarf-region1.rar

Played in 39c from the very beginning.
The cook/brewer got slightly burned by a fire imp and as soon as I built a bed, went to sleep and fell unconscious. He was given water once, I think. I even assigned a peasant to nothing but healthcare, but the poor dwarf still wasn't being fed or given water, so I reassigned the pesant to farming.

Maybe healthcare jobs should be handled like managed jobs, so they won't get cancelled if everyone's busy?

No one would give me wounded dwarf water in 39b. I just installed 39c and 3 seconds after I press resume someone is giving him water. Something was definatly fixed from b to c. I have yet to see if he will get fed and recover.

I've got the uninjured resters getting back up now.  I'll check onodera's save in a bit.

I have the same problem (39c). Nobody is bringing my injured dwarves any food or water. I have about 20 idlers, several buckets, even built a well for water... nothing will get them to help their fellow dwarves.

My injured guys always rest up and get fed/drinks. Although I've had some dwarves who get the endless sleep bug, even while resting. This causes them to lay in bed while they could go fetch food and drinks themselves (but they wont), hence other dwarves don't take care of them. Deleting their beds fixed it, although I lost one before because I didn't notice.

I loaded my save, and one guy got up and started walking around all drowsy and wounded, never did get back to sleep. Another guy "suffocated" in bed. I think he had a leg wound or something. Another dwarf who got wounded (non-soldier, i think) was helped by someone and did get medical care and lived. I saved my game just as I was about to cause a cave-in on give a new skylight to my noble who was demanding and mandating stupid stuff. I mean come on, don't demand glass on a map that doesn't have lava... and "you cannot export any steel items" when I didn't even have Iron on this map is kinda ridiculous.

Had carpenter with red leg at start of game. He stayed in bed for few years. He surely was feed and had water, because there were a lot of messages "unable to give food: no food" once. Someone brings food for sure as long as there are idle dwarfs. But he still died of hunger without getting any better. It strange, because that time there were enough of food.
Animals doesn't recover also. Some wounded dogs wander around for years and falls unconscious frequently till it happens on the trap, triggering it.

The main problem I have isn't necessarily keeping them fed and watered, it's getting the wounds to heal at all. It's really not reasonable for a dwarf to spend a year and a half in bed because of a broken leg. Perhaps the percentage chance of a wound healing as a season goes by should be dramatically increased?
