the new spike traps are already being built, I just figured I wouldn't mention them until they're done.

The three or so that were on the bridge didn't get many -kills- per sey, but they did manage to maim a entire ambush (as in, every goblin (save the one the planter throttled) had at least one red injury) and a hobbling goblin is a dead goblin

I don't want to focus too much on defense, my goal is to elevate the status of the common working dwarf after all =p

Also, Aardvark, would you mind if I changed Affy's title from Capitan of the Guard to "Resident Woodchipper" it seems more apt to the effect she has on kobalds.  ;)

Only if you want an axe in your neck. NO.

Fair enough, she already has more titles than can fit on the screen anyway  :) I kinda want to check her legend's entry. She has 4 named kills (two are sparring partners  :'( ) and thirteen "other" kills, but that's defiantly not all of them, seeing as how the unnamed goblins she maimed and left to bleed out aren't on that list. neither is the kobald that was turned into red gooey confetti.

I'm currently around half way through summer. Hopefully I'll write it up tonight, this is taking longer than I though, all that writing...

I've got long stretches of free time on Saturday though, and a bit of time on Friday, so, whoever is going next, expect it done and all by Sunday morning, maybe a bit sooner if I can slaughter enough muskoxen to get my FPS above 30.

EDIT: Summer's write up. No pictures, sorry.

Summer, In which the nobles are appeased, retaliate, and come to harm through their own snobbery.
In which the epic search for coal remains unsuccessful, and a great project is began.

1st Hematite. I have ordered the construction of additional spike traps on the bridge, as they were so effective at maiming the goblin ambush, I hope they will prove as useful in the event of a siege, or just another ambush. Provided the goblins cooperate and come from that direction, but all evidence indicates that they will.

2nd Hematite. we've run out of coke. This, evidently, means that we cannot make any more iron armor, which, as has been pointed out to me, means that Affy will be displeased at leading a squad half equiped with fine iron armor, and half equiped with worn pig tail cloth. I saw what happened to that kobald. I'm asking the miners to begin the digging of exploratory tunnels, they tell me they're bored with hauling rocks back and forth anyway.

3rd Hematite That crazy little kid seems to have calmed down and started behaving more dwarvishly. He created an Ashen Bracelet he calls "Shesam Torish" or "The Zepher of Crowns" in the common tung. It is worht around 8400 I'm told. Not bad for someone who only recently gained control of his bowels.

4th Hematite, we've struck Limonite. Which would be useful, if we had coke to smelt ore.

11th Hematite. We've struck Topaz and Clear Zircon, which, while not what we need, can at least be used without coke, and looks quite nice.

15th Hematite. Bah! These nobles are insatiable! No matter how much work is put into their rooms and tombs they're not happy! As much as I'd love to give them a chance to inspect their tombs permanently, I need them content and complacent lest they catch on to my plans...

16th Hematite. We've struck Galena, I hope that can be smelted into coal...

[second entry] Well damn.

18th Hematite. An Ambush! Tragically no where near the now reinforced bridge, Likot Alatholil was out gathering wood when they struck, quickly grabbing him and pinning him to the ground while cold metal became intimately familiar with his intestinal tract. A second band was discovered by the other dwarves as they ran for the safety of the fortress, one of the war dogs selling its life valiantly to spare a child from a swift death. Capitan Affy was called in. A few marksdwarves who had been dining decided to stop running to their post on the walls to take shots at the goblin ambush through the pit the bridge to the trade depot normally spans, managing to drop one of the axe wielding monsters. As soon as the first goblin set foot on the bridge to the fort, they immediately all turned and fled, Affy had arrived and it seemed the Capitan's mere presence is now all that is required to route smaller bands of these creatures. Happily, the goblins chose to flee across the trapped bridge, three were killed more-or-less instantly by the traps, and the rest suffered at least minor injuries, save one poor goblin recruit, who's right leg was mangled. Affy caught him.
In light of this, I will be adding more traps to the bridge, next time, none escape.

3rd Malachite. We've found a bunch more gems, but I find it difficult to be enthusiastic as we still need coal.

5th Malachite. The engraver Iton Oddomalc has given birth to a beautiful baby girl. I have also finally convinced the dwarves to engage in a great construction to honor our founders.

8th Malachite. The Countess' Consort is finally satisfied with his arraignments. Perhaps he'll relax, end his constant mandating and alterations to the price of goods? I doubt it. Progress on the secret project has been stalled by a monkey attack, Affy killed the Troupe, no-one useful was hurt, only the Consort, who seems to greatly enjoy standing around watching the useful dwarves work. serves him right. The Tax collector decided he needed a single mitten, a surprisingly reasonable request.

18th Malachite. An unexpected disaster occurred, a section of the secret project collapsed! No masons were seriously injured, the mayor, however, broke his left arm. I'm sure he'll recover fully. the true tragedy was that of one of our poor fisherdwarves who was knocked into the river and quickly drowned. His loss shall be mourned.

19th Malachite. A second collapse! I'm not even sure what in the world there was to collapse! This one claimed a cat, a long-maimed wardog, and, hilariously, knocked the Countess unconscious. She also has taken to standing around watching the real dwarves work.

26th Malachite. The mines have informed me the past week of finding well over a dozen different variates of rock, all of which are quite pretty, some are even usable for ore, but none contain coal.

1st Galena. We've struck more Galena, Normally this wouldn't note mentioning, but perhaps this is a good omen.
or something.

6th Galena. The Countess is finally appeased, perhaps that blow to the head lowered her standards. Also, I finally got around to asking the clothier to fufilling the Mitten Mandate.

10th Galena. The Tax Collector has mandated the construction of gold items. Not only do we not have coke to smelt gold ore, we lack gold ore all together! Hopefully some poor innocent dwarf is spared the hammer. Also, the miners have struck graphite, this is good news! I was running low on pencils.

16th Galena The Countess now wants catapult parts, what for I can't imagine. Perhaps she wants her own personal catapult... If she expects a siege operator to be assigned to protect her tomb with a catapult at all times, I might go mental.

25th Galena, Mebzuir Ukerfixod, a guard, has suffocated after his neck was broken in a sparing session.

End of Summer.

Summer was pretty uneventful, aside from the goblin ambush claiming a unfortunate hauler and the nobles getting some well-deserved beatings from monkeys and random collapses (seriously, I'm wondering what in the world collapsed, must have deconstructed something in the wrong order, oh well)

going to start Autumn later tonight.

Remember that the coal will only be in the siltstone here since that is the only Sedimentary layer that is there. So search in those areas. You can also start burning some wood to get charcoal. And we can order it from the caravans that arrive.

Yeah, I'm going to have to start burning wood, which was defiantly plan B, the siltstone layer, annoyingly, is mixed into granite on some z levels, full of microcilene on others, and mixed in with dirt on others, there is coal out there, and I will find it sooner or later, until then, I suppose I'll just incite the Elves to siege (which they may or may not do in the version, I haven't had it happen yet)

I actually hadn't been planning on collapsing the fortress on the nobles, just their own decadent rooms, I'm trying to find some way to do that without having to totally redo them or the fortress' layout, so *that* secret project hasn't begun yet.

I might just make a secret statue garden and make it the private property of which ever "lucky" noble "deserves" such a "reward".

Alright, that was way to many quotation marks.

Ask for coal from the merchants. Also, you can also find lingite below the sedimentary layer.

Snap.

Alright, I was a moron and had to save scum (flooded the whole damn fortress while trying to save an axeman from drowning. stupid stupid stupid)
I lost all of winter and a chunk of autumn, including a underwhelming human siege, and an freakin' MASSIVE siege of 70 goblins led by 8 elves.

So I probably won't have it up until later on Sunday, sorry much, I'll make sure I don't flood the world again.

The sieges went pretty well actually, only casualty was the dwarf who fell into the moat (the one that caused me to flood the place by accident as I frantically tried to save him. memo to self, up/down staircases cause floods)

Killed around 9ish of the human from their siege, and around 30-40 goblins from their siege, the marksdwarves are like machine guns.

Autumn, Winter, The save, and so on.

first up, so you can download while you read: Download the save!

Autumn, In which old trade partners become irate, the caravan goes missing, and a new item of legend is born.

5th of Limestone. The mayor also wants me to get the gauntlets done for Affy's squad, she chose to show this by banning the export of aforementioned items. We're up to our neck in goblin clothes and she's worried about me selling off a dozen gauntlets?

14th Limestone. The Humans have laid siege to our fortress! Did one of the previous leaders anger them? They come from the north, 7 swordsmen, 6 wrestlers, and one mounted spearman. The dwarves were all ordered inside, but the Mayor decided she needed to conduct a meeting on the bridge, presumably with her either her imaginary friend (as no other dwarves were present) or with the rather angry looking humans. Stupid, stupid stupid. To make matters worse, she has her infant with her, we definatly can't allow both to come to harm, Affy and Scruga's squads were both ordered across the bridge post haste to protect the mayor. Affy, despite her full suit of plate mail, beat the other nine dwarves there by a fair stretch, and was quickly surrounded by the 14 humans. Despite being surrounded and totally outnumbered, Affy manages to cleave three heads from their owner's shoulders, which is doubly impressive considering the height difference, before Scruga and the other 8 dwarves arrive to chase off and maim the rest of the humans. Affy, as if she felt the need to prove just how quickly she can sprint with a bruised spleen, chased after and chopped up the horse the leader rode. Only one human escaped. Scruga managed one kill.

[img=http://img172.imageshack.us/img172/5493/affykillsasiegexh1.th.jpg]

22nd Limestone. What is it with the kids here? Zuglar Edembenem has been acting quite strange lately, locking himself in his room for long periods of time and playing odd melancholy tunes on his piccolo. He emerged today, dressed head to toe in black, having dyed his hair and beard black as well, with the occasional purple or white streak! How strange! He then rushed down to the workshops, claimed one of the craftdwarves as his own, and gathered three siltstone, three monkey bones, pink garnes, turtle shell, dog leather and rope reed cloth.
Also, Affy has fully recovered from her bruised spleen.

2nd Sandstone. Monkey attack! fifteen of the little devils are harassing the workers, Affy and Scruga went to play, bits of monkey are everywhere. Highlight was Affy decapitating a monkey, then kicking its head off a cliff into the river.

13th Sandstone. Mafol Logemmorul, one of the War Dogs that set off with the initial expedition, has died of old age, she is succeeded by around 30 puppies she left behind, many of them delicious.

14th Sandstone, Zuglar has emerged, and with him he has brought Sibnirshaketh, a siltstone crown, I've included a sketch of it...
[img=http://img172.imageshack.us/img172/8343/artefactdw3.th.jpg]
He has also finally went back to dressing normally and washed that dye of of his beard. I guess his mother was right, it was just a phase.

27th Sandstone. The guard Erith Atrstigaz suffocated in sparring practice today.

29th Timber. Progress on the secret project has been slow of late, I've decided to speed it up a bit by drafting more workers and making a few new stockpiles next to the construction. Why didn't I think of that months ago?
Also, we congratulated Mafol Tiristoltar today on the birth of her baby girl.

End of Autumn.

1st Moonstone, Autumn has come and gone without a sign of the caravan, I wonder what happened to them? The project continues, and is now around half way done, we should be able to finish before the year is out.

13th Moonstone. Evidently, today is give birth to tons of puppies day. Three of the dogs just delivered, I'm not even sure how many puppies. The countess says that she might have to impose a fine for "littering" no one laughed.

14th Moonstone. A vile force of darkness has arrived! From the North East come 8 pikemen 5 bowmen, and 12 wrestlers led bya Elf Mace lord and an Elf Master lasher, From the North West comes 8 pikemen 5 bowmen, and 4 wrestlers led by an Elf Hammer lord, they stream across the bridge from the north and hit the traps.

What a triumph! I feel it necessary to pause here to make a note: HUGE SUCCESS. Truly I find it difficult to commit to word exactly the extent of my satisfaction. Dwarven mechanics, they kill everything because they can.
[img=http://img376.imageshack.us/img376/2599/trapaftermathjj5.th.jpg]
Affy dashed in to clean up the rest, she managed to chase three down before the rest escaped. I think some type of sprint training is necessary for the rest of the military. If Affy keeps getting miles ahead, she's going to run into a bit more than she can handle one of these days.

21st Moonstone. Former Ruler Keldor Lolormorul has given birth to a boy!

26th Moonstone. The Countess mandates the construction of three platinum items. I'm not sure if she meant it, or if she was just shouting out things in labor pain, because she then gave birth to a baby boy. How many children has the countess had now? Perhaps she should have been named "Fertile Myrtle"

1st Opal, the Project is now around 80% complete! Progress has been great thanks to those new stockpiles, We'll probably finish before the season is out!

12th Opal, We're nearly finished, just a few final touches.

18th Opal, the Mayor has mandated the construction of three idols.

20th Opal, It's finished! The secret project is complete!
Alright, so it isn't every secret, but the wooden bridge has been completely replaced by a sturdy, dwarven siltstone bridge!
[img=http://img369.imageshack.us/img369/5820/bridgedonegn7.th.jpg]
I've decided that the bridge should be named "The Kel Memorial Bridge" in memory of our first leader.

4th Obsidian. Deduk Rovodtomem, a guard, bled to death in training.

16th Obsidian. The Dungeon master demands a clear glass window in his office. I suppose he, like Fertile Myrtle, didn't get the note that there's NO SAND.

1st Granite. Spring comes, and with it, my term as leader expires. I can't help shake the feeling that I have failed my fellow workers. The quarters stand unimproved and still mostly door-less, and the nobles are as decadent as ever. At least they now have room to dine. Perhaps the next ruler will be able to better serve the common dwarf.

Alright, well, It took me longer than I thought, but it is done.
Notes to future rulers:
Affy isn't currently the leader of his squad, some stupid wrestler hit Elite status before Affy did. I don't know how to work military ranks well, but it seems I can't reassign the elite to be under a non-elite. Anyway, fix this somehow.
We still need doors on the rooms  ;)
We need a few more prison cells, also, try to make each cell have a bed, a 1 square booze stockpile, and a 1 square food stockpile. This will keep prisoners from getting horribly depressed, not that it's been a problem yet, but an ounce of prevention....
Road, I have no idea where it used to run, so if you do, you might want to reconstruct it.
Also, find out what happened to the traders, They never showed up, and that worries me.

let me know if the save download is working properly, I think it will.
