I just took the father and son out of town ('Cause I recruited them both) and killed the son. The father just watched while I set fire to a birch right next to both of them, and stood there and burned to death over his son's body.

Aaaaaand you're a complete monster.

As we all are. You are now my spiritual liege.

Well, we all need something to keep our thirst down.... Human blood is always worth a taste.... I almost did the same to the mother, and half-thought about grabbing the rest of the family, but I only found the mother/father, who were both rangers.
Anyway, I just charged an elf child, who fell into a pond behind him :D
This is all during my "quest" to end all life, which started with just destroying all those annoying gobbos, but they're allied with other races in this release....

I never manage to get them back to their hometown because, lets just say they have a nasty "accident" and fall into a pool of water.

Are you sure? In Valcon's LP, and in several times I've tried, retiring seems to get rid of them
On further experimenting with the current version, rescued child prisoners do appear to go away if you retire in a town.  They do not join that town's population as far as I can tell.  Instead, they seem to find a random nearly cave to live in.  If you 'rescue' a bunch of children, retire in a town, then resume the adventurer and travel around to caves you can run into them again.  If they aren't promptly killed by the cave inhabitants, they'll start following you again at this point.  You can 'rescue' the same children over and over again this way.
