Ancient Goblins!?
« on: July 16, 2008, 11:11:36 pm »

Holy carp! One of the first goblins in my game is still alive after 198 years.

Stozu Ngomdosta Musobxog Olzul, "Stozu Doomednoble, the Full Phrase of Legend"

A priestess of the local demon, only has 5 kills, but still, a goblin living that long is darned impressive.

Outlived all 9 of her offspring. Certainly doesn't live up to the last name she started with.

Actually there's a whole stable of goblins, 7 or 8, I think, that've been around since the beginning. And I've only found one elf so far... who's done absolutely nothing of note since year 2.

I've seen 300 year old gobbos. Though it doesn't upset me much, i mean, they usually kill eachother instead.

If you get them enslaved by humans, there is a very small chance that they will live for the entire duration of world gen.

Yeah, since goblins don't have an age tag, they're as immortal as elves.  One of the first times I played adventure mode, I had a good big of fun croquetting sleeping priests off the roof of their temple.  After I got shot to peices, I looked them up in legends and found out I had slain an entire thousand year old priesthood.  Felt like a badass I did.

I had a goblin who killed 2 dragons(both where wounded in battle against other creatures)
After he killed those dragons he didn't do anything more. I guess he thought the great dragonslayer was to important to do anything.

World gen for 39b ended in 338. I do not want any of my dwarfs/adventurers tangling with some of the things that survived the entire 3.3 centuries.
Among them are
2 dragons with 40+ kills
1 titan with 60+ kills (and a lot of worshippers)
a slew of giants with 50+ kills

The worst of the bunch was a demon with 44 kills by the year 31. Yeesh, same number of kills as the heavy hitters in one tenth the time. Trouble is that he was shot and eaten by an elf that same year.

The elf went on to become an herbalist. Guess the event turned him off of meat?

That's pretty cool. There are some indications in Tolkien that tolkien's orcs were "immortal" also in a similar sense to how the Elves were.

Weren't Tolkien's orcs twisted / warped elves? I believe that's why the elves despised them so much.

Quote from: Wikipedia
In some versions of his stories, Tolkien conceived Orcs to be Elves, enslaved by Morgoth, broken and twisted into his evil soldiers. Other versions (including notes made both early and late in Tolkien's life) have Orcs as 'parodies' or false-creations of Morgoth's that are animated solely by his evil will (or, perhaps, by his own essence diffused into each), and made intentionally to mock or spite Eru Ilúvatar's creations — the Eldar and Edain.

Either way, it makes a lot of sense for them to be immortal. I wonder if the Uruk-Hai (possibly cross-bred with humans) are immortal too? It's possible that they lost their immortality by being bred with mortals.

Hum, it'd be neat if one day Dwarf Fortress allowed (certain) split bloodlines. Imagine meeting a Half-Elf, Half-Goblin. We're a long way from that though.

of course after a few hundred years of child stealing i doubt there would be a single pureblooded goblin being born, the only purebloods would be the first few generations who managed to survive

And, due to Faller's Law of Rarity, incredibly powerful as well.

I have a couple of 2000 year old goblins in the world I just generated. They both have over a hundred kills. Most of which I'm betting are goblins they murdered throughout the years. Now I know why goblins don't bother going to war, they're too busy murdering eachother!

Have a winner here.

Osnun Evilallied the Spotted Sanctum of Esteem, one of the very first goblins of the world, managed to live until year 600 !

In 1, she married Smunstu Witchhall (the leader of those goblins, a guard), settled in Lieshowers (in the malignant castle, one tower away from her demon lord) and became a fishery worker.
In 2, Niwora the titan attacked the tower and Smunstu was forced to fight yet managed to flee.

This could've been enough for the two goblins, yet it hasn't been.
Some time laters, a giant rampage ocurred on the fortress : 6 giants attacked Lieshowers ! Osnun tried to prevent the first one from stealing her home yet was unable to fight : the giant quickly smashed her right arm and let her flee. Although the giant stole their food and wealth, they kept on living and had a baby, Mato Rewardhate.

Years passed by, the 6 giants rampaged the fortress quite often, but nobody tried to stop them anymore. Smunstu fought a passing-by hydra, Gulsheb, in 5 yet managed to escape unharmed. A year later, two cyclops attacked Lieshowers : Smunstu killed one, Seba the Action of Bronze, and the other one, Tusnung, fled quickly.

In 8, Moslé Cleaneddung the Hydra attacked Lieshowers. Moslé first saw Osnun and attacked her, but her husband arrived and fought the hydra, giving Osnun the opportunity to flee - at the cost of his life. Smunstu sacrificed himself to save his wife.

Seeing their leader devoured, two goblins stood against the hydra :
Osnun vicecleaned, who had been scouting the area around Lieshowers for 6 years, and Nguslu Menacepraises the Spiteful Ferocity of Nightmares, a guard. While Osnun ripped off one of the hydra's head and fled, exhausted, Nguslu didn't give up and finally killed the hydra, thus avenging the death of Osnun's husband, Smunstu.

At the end of the year another hydra, Nîles, swore an oath of vengeance against those who killed Moslé, especially Smunstu. Nîles attacked Osnun (Smunstu's wife) in 8, but she managed to flee, in order not to let her only son orphan. Nîles came back the following year when Osnun was declared leader of the Wickedness of Circumstances. She tried to catch Osnun again, but made up her mind when seeing Osnun Vicecleaned, who had ripped off Moslé's head. Nîles killed and devoured Vicecleaned, and went away.

The 6 giants rampages followed, without any resistance. Niwora the titan, who nobody had seen since 2 when Smunstu fought her attacked the dark fortress again. Osnun had enough fleeing and fought with skill and hatred. The titan fled. For every goblin in the dark fortress she was a hero.
Niwora came back two years later, in 12, and tried to lighten her shame by killing Osnun ; however, Osnun once again defeated her and this time killed Niwora.

In the meantime, Osnun had been known as the enemy of all hydras. She had been personnally attacked by Snuko Dungssack (twice) and by Nîles (one more time). However, after Niwora's death, the hydras decided to take a break and not attack Lieshowers for a time.

This was Osnun's first time of relative peace, only bothered by the giants' rampages, which were now more like a ritual offerings for not being smashed. When 12, in 14, Mato Rewardhate got married, moved out to the nearest tower, the Fortress of Torment, and became a ranger. One year later he encoutered Tusnung Rundiamond the cyclop. Smunstu had killed Tusnung's friend Seba in 5, that's why Tusnung wanted to kill Smunstu's son : she smashed Mato's foot, but the wound didn't stop Mato from killing Tusnung and finishing his father's duty.

There's few to say about the following years. In 16, Stozu Witchpraises the Pinnacle of Crowns, a fellow ranger of Mato's, killed one of the giants during their 27th rampage. In 20 Nîles came back and was struck down by Dostnglosp Cleanedblack, a goblin who had lost an eye to a cyclop and was murdered in 21. A dragon attacked in 25, and a hydra before, although no one remembers what happened. The same year Gulsheb the hydra who had fought Smunstu 20 years before attacked Osnun who managed to flee.

In 38, Mato's son Stodost Tenderhells had left Lieshowers and settled in Liethorns with Snodub Cruelgorges, the daughter of the goblin who killed Nîles. Although she lost a leg to one of the 5 giants, she became a ranger and killed a minotaur in 37. Unfortunately, Mata the hydra found her and killed her, knowing who she was, in 38.

38 was a sad year for Osnun. She had an argument with her son, Mato. Furious about the death of his wife, Stôsost, as the leader of the Tick of Dikes ruling Liethorns, wanted to raise an army and get rid of every giant, cyclop or hydra in the region. He asked Mato for help, and Mato agreed. Osnun thought it would only lead to the death of every goblin in the mountains and that Slakga the demon lord didn't want this. Following her duty, Osnun killed her own son in order to protect the community she inheritated from her husband.

500 years passed without anything really important in the mountains. Osnun was still alive, as well as Stôsost. Mata, who had forced Osnun to kill her son, was struck down in 78 by Atu Evilroots, orphan 12-year-old fishery worker, in Lieshowers. Mata had attacked his wife 2 years before (she was 14 then). His wife, Dostngosp Boardedterror the Courteous Volcano, is still alive.
Gulsheb the hydra attacked Liethorns in 56 and stumbled across Stozu Witchpraises the Pinnacle of Crowns, who had killed one of the 6 giants. Gulsheb died there.

One after the others, each and every of the enemies of Lieshowers were slain. Now, only 3 giants remain.

Everything went smoothly until 553, when Osnun mysteriously murdered Amxu Doomedreigned... Want to know why?

One thing that struck me is that goblins only have one child and then they're extremely peaceful. These goblins are living in the moutains of the west, without any contact with any other civilisation ever since the beggining of times and there are so much of them who are older than 300. I thought they would fight with each other just for fun.
