Good seeds for new version
« on: July 16, 2008, 08:15:37 pm »

It appears that we all need new seeds because of the new version and some of us (namely me) are too lazy to search by hand for new sites.

So has anyone found any good spots for a fort? If so, chuck 'em right here for all to see.

Is this pretty much the same thread as this? Oh well, doesn't matter, I've been looking for a place to show off my new fortress location anyhow. It's probably the most, well scenic location I've ever seen, though I'm not that experienced.

Here is the top layer. Note the free standing pillars of rock. Not sure what I'll do with those yet.

Here is a lower layer (there's at least five or six). Note the magma vent in its own natural little roofed alcove.

I have the seed and could probably find it again on the map if anyone's interested. The world itself is pretty cool, it's almost completely bisected down the middle by a huge mountain range.

Oh, if the huge pictures slow down page loading too much, just tell me and I'll change them to links.

Wow, that looks cool. I'd like to give it a try, although I doubt I'd actually end up finding the same spot in the world. :P

Nah, shouldn't be too hard.

Here is the seed.

Here is the location.

I botched my attempt there pretty bad by not using the lava alcove as my front door, which would have been less practical but much cooler than what I actually did. Oh, and wildlife is pretty boring, just fish, which are easy to avoid, a few fire imps, and an alligator or two who don't seem very interested in dwarf meat.

Escape screen, export local image. It takes forever, but it's totally worth it.

I've tried to use the seed above and got it generated. :) I exactly found the same spot as in the pictures, only without the magma vent? Is that randomly generated? I've dug to the bottom on the place the picture shows, but nothing. Everything else is there. The sandstone, the water, the pillars, but no magma. :( What could have caused this?

My guess is that it randomly digs volcanos in the available areas of high volcanism, but not nessisarilly on every sqaure of high volcanism, try increasing the min amout of volcanos setting (its set to three here it appears try putting it to 10 or 20) and see if that works.

Edit:  you could avtualy probly get away with setting it to 120 or 100 actually, the risk is that it might reject that world though so its hard to tell.

Sounds like Toady may have more than one random number generator and instantiating it is running into a race condition or something... very interesting.

Is your game modded? Have you tried it on a fresh install? Did you use 39b or c? (I assume 1138 used b).  Are you sure you used the exact same parameters?

Yeah, that's a bit odd. I was using b when it was first created. I've generated it twice since, and had magma both times.

Just for fun, I tried generating it in c just now, and it was awesome, like finding a parallel world. Almost everything was the same, except for a few differences, no magma was one of them, the nearby mountains being haunted was another.  ;D I might have to play a game in this one just to see how my parralel universe dwarves fare.

Edit: just noticed that instead of the lampreys and longnose gar of my first version, I have a page and a half of CARP! This is going to be awesome.

I tried it with an unmodified version of c. I was almost suspecting windows vs. wine. That they treated random differently. ;)

The fabulous continent of nourishment? I bet you'll be disappointed if your dwarves start starving to death.

<_<
It would seem that in c this location changes somewhat.
The mountains become haunted, and the magma dissapears.

EDIT: An interesting feature nobody has pointed out yet is the three volcanic islands situated very closely to each other. Mega volcanic, really: Almost every square has magma in it on these islands.
