They only use wood from emo trees that cut themselves.

If I'm right, the lore reasons for the elves are as follows:

They don't object to using wood, eating plants, or even eating meat. These are all natural things. However, the elves have a strong connection to nature, so they only do these things when it is the proper time. Animals die of old age or accident, trees fall due to winds, rockslides, floods, etc, plants provide berries and fruits specifically for other creatues to eat, etc.

It's also possible that they use their nature magic to get wood from trees with out causing them any actual damage.

I think the reason the elves care about everyone else using wood/meat/etc is that all of this was done with violence without regards to the natural cycle that tree or animal would normally have gone through. So Dwarves/Humans/Goblins/whatever are vicious savages who ravage the world for their own needs without living in harmony with it, and are thus evil and may be killed for the betterment of the world. After killing something, the elves eat the fallen so that the proper cycle of nature can be continued. That way it is, at least, not a wasted kill.

Kind of like the difference between killing for sport and killing for food, just...moreso.

What the hell happened? Did Toady accidently give the elves a massive dose of whatever virus it was featured in the movie 28 days later?

It was on purpose.  Eating things you've killed is Nature's (read: the elves') way.  They also get real pissed about the things they've always complained about before.

I think we have a word for that: Bunk.

Dwarves use as much of their kill as possible (skin, meat, and bone), so I wouldn't exactly call it killing for sport.  It's more like the elves believe they're the only ones with the morality and purity of purpose to do these things, while in reality they're frothing zealots.

Elves don't have death camps. They build fast food restaurants.

Elves don't have Funeral Pyres... they have Barbecue Grills.

So... why don't elves hate housecats?

As far as how "natural" dwarven butchery is, I'd like to point out the kitten-and-donkey drops that cause the excess animal population of a fort to go tumbling down to an explosive death on the ground below, where they will rot into nothingness by the end of the season.

Hehe. Maybe they should. But I'd guess that the reason is that Elves only hate Sentients who kill things for something other then self defense.

And I wasn't trying to say that dwarven butchery was the same as killing for sport, it was just an analogy for how it's viewed. The same way that some people are against hunters who kill for sport but are ok with ones who kill for food. Elves are against people who eat meat that is violently killed, but ok with meat that is gotten from natural deaths. Or, I suppose, violently killed in battle with Elves.

Hmm...elves on a battle field are rather similar to crows.

So, when an elf merchant shoots a wolf on it's way in, and I butcher the wolf, why won't the buy the meat?
You killed the stupid wolf! Now eat it! Tastes good!

Ahem. Back to the main topic.

So the main question here is how you got some elves to survive world generation. More forests? Ending it at year 200? All my elves live in dwarf-owned forest retreats, so they don't have their own civ.

I want some elf bones so I can make some cool crafts out of them.

I cant even get elves to last till the year 500.  ANd I've been creating worlds covered in forests... I've tried with less forests and they seem to fare slightly better but still die out way before I reach my 60% megabeast check.  Maybe I should just play in the year two >.>

Large maps?  Elves do better in the late game.
